Activating by opening the lid (Windows xp)

When i bought my laptop i had a very interesting option. I could enter my notes just by opening the lid and not to wait for the computer start all its options. When i closed the lid, but did not shut it off, the computer was switched off, however when i opened the lid it immediately started up.Unfortunately i have given the computer to be reinstalled and after that i cannot use this function. When i close the lid, the computer is switchng off fully and when i open the lid i have to click the button for start up and wait for the long tedious process of opening up.

Control Panel > Power Options > Advanced...

It sounds like your option on closing the lid has been set to hibernate. (Depending on your hardware, you may have different options to me.)
