    Recover unsaved document

One of my two WinXP machines has Works 6.0. My wife started typing a letter yesterday, but left it without saving it. (Yes, I've told her that's never a good idea.) Today she returned to her writing, and when the letter grew to require a second page, Works popped up a message box with those dreaded words: "Works has encountered a problem...." I know MS-Word 2003 (which I use on my computer) can recover a document after a crash. Is there any way to retrieve my wife's work in Works 6? Did her computer stash her work in some temp file, or is it all lost and gone forever?

    My wife swears she's going back to a manual typewriter after this! <img src=/S/aflame.gif border=0 alt=aflame width=16 height=16>

Does version 6 use MS Word, or did that start at a later version?

If so, then it would be the same process.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

It does not appear to have any trace of Word in it

I don't know anything about the Works word processor, but if the document is kept in memory only while it is being created, it has vanished without a trace. There is a chance that the program stores files in the Temp folder (probably Cocuments and Settings<username>Local SettingsTemp). You could look if there is a file in Temp with the size and last modified date/time you'd expect. If you find one, change its extension to .rtf and see if it can be opened.

Hans, you're the man of the day! With your tip, I found the temp file
