system freezes (win xp pro sp2)

I am working on my daughter's system - an older Compaq. It has an AMD 1.1 MHz processor, 384 MB RAM (pc 100 - 3 sticks) and a 40 GB Hard Drive. Video Adapter (S3 Graphics Pro Savage 8A26) and Sound card (SoundMax) are integrated in the motherboard. Network adapter is a SMC EZ Card (SMC 1211 TX)

She had complained that the computer would randomly freeze. Only solution to the freeze would be to turn off the power at the tower and then start up again.

I reformatted the hard drive and reinstalled Windows XP Pro and fully updated it. Unfortunately, the system is still randomly freezing. I presume it is a hardware problem but would like some guidance as to where to start.

    Thanks.

It would be helpful to know how often it freezes. If it is frequent then it is much easier to fix than if it only freezes once a month!

Have you looked in the Windows Event Log to see if any errors are reported before you restart?

The freezes seems to be a daily issue but I will leave the system on and give you more details on the frequency.

I just checked the Event Log after starting the system this morning. There is an error listed under SYSTEM - the source of the error is Dhcp - the description of the error is as follows: The IP address lease 192.168.1.103 for the Network Card with network address 0010b5ca7d3a has been denied by the DHCP servier 192.168.1.1 (The DHCP Server has sent a DHCPNACK message.)

Once the system freezes, I am not able to do anything but restart the system.

    Thanks for your help.

i had a slightly older compaq than the one you are describing, but it was a Presario - which may be the same make that you have. Mine worked nicely for about a year or so when it suddenly stopped working correctly (it froze often)... at the time it was still under warranty and a repair man came by to fix it. he ended up switching out the hard drive, then he came back a few weeks later after it still wasn't working and switched out the memory, then he came back a few weeks later and switched out the motherboard... then <img src=/S/igiveup.gif border=0 alt=igiveup width=31 height=23> over the course of a few months.

i think that those old compaq's just had a myriad of hardware problems - especially since they tried to do on-board everything, which at the time wasn't very good (at least in my experiences). a few years later on-board technology in general seemed to advance to a stable condition where I use on-board everything - but video.

so it sounds to me to be a hardware problem because of my prior experiences with Compaq... ever since then, i've built my computers myself to avoid such problems. i would suggest checking the CPU temperature, it could be overheating.

This is also a Presario - the system is about 4 years old. It worked fine until about 3 months ago. So whatever is causing the issue is a "new" issue.
