    Re: pdfMachine

Thanks for the link, Alan. I tried out the free version. I found a couple of drawbacks that it has compared to CutePDF writer and one advantage (at least for me):

    1. The default option loads the PDF file into the Broadgun PDF reader. From there it is possible to save the file. This results in quite a few steps to print a PDF. Printing directly to a PDF file results in a watermark. Printing via CutePDF writer is direct.

    2. I copied some text from a PDF back into word. Unfortunately some punctuation changed. Eg There's became There.s. This might be because I'm using Word 97. No such problem with CutePDF writer.

    3. CutePDF Writer saves my User Name as the author. I definitely don't want this. The default setting for PDFMachine is to leave these fields blank. It would be good to be able to edit the field but blank is preferable to my User Name.

On balance I find the freeware version of CutePDF Writer is more convenient than the freeware version of PDFmachine.

If the document properties of the PDF files are the only problem, PDF Info <img src=/S/free.gif border=0 alt=free width=30 height=15>ware might be the solution. 913 MB

Well, if you're gonna screw something up, you might as well try for the lot!
