I have just turned my HP with XP on and what I am getting is 'Operation System not found' - I am not sure how crucial it is, I am taking it to a BestBuy tonight, in a meantime can someone give me any word on what to do?
Thanks

P.S. I am glad I have a laptop!!!

Check the diskette and CD drives and remove any diskettes or CD and try again.

I'd love to know what best buy says... i got that same message a while back and i had to format

i think i had to get a new hard drive actually - hopefully its not that severe in your case.

If there is nothing in the Diskette or CD drives, then that message say that either your Hard Disk or Hard Disk contorller has failed, or the Master Boot Record on the hard disk has been overwritten.

or, if you're really lucky, a cable has come loose and needs to be reseated.

StuartR !!!
I am logged on from my 'Operation System not found' computer. Am I feeling stupid!!!
I had the same message yesterday but restarted and worked whole day.
Today I decided - it is a bad thing happening...I am doomed.

THANKS a million, I hope to be able to help someone as you just did to me.

Now I'm confused - did you fix this by reseating a cable?

The real message for the problems I described is "Operating System not found." If you are really getting a message "Operation System not found," and the system is still booting and running, then I would suspect some kind of Virus or other malware.

Re: 'Operation System not found' (XP)

This happened to me once and I almost had a heart attack. I thought I was going to have to reinstall everything. But before doing anything irreversible, I bought a copy of Symantec's Partition Magic to see if that could recover anything useful that might have gotten mangled in the Master Boot Record or Partition Table. I booted from the CD, and lo and behold, there was the active partition on my C drive, flagged as hidden. How that happened I have no idea. Partition Magic doesn't allow you to hide an active partition. After unhiding it, there was everything back to normal. I can't tell you how big a sigh of relief I breathed.

Re: 'Operation System not found' (XP)

Hello again...
Yesterday I re-plugged the cable and worked whole day.
Today I am turning PC on and see Disk read error...Press Ctr+Alt+Delete to restart.
So I did few times and no luck.

Once Windows XP started CHKSCN something and it found corrupted files and it started deleting them
messages were:
Deleting duplicate ID segment 243567
Deleting duplicate ID segment 243568
Deleting duplicate ID segment 243569
Deleting duplicate ID segment 243570
etc

but at the end message was
Unsufficient disk space to insert index entry

and it went to Operating system not found...

Please, help.

Sounds like your disk drive is on the way out to me. Do you have a backup? If so then just buy a new disk drive and restore - otherwise I guess you'll have to reinstall everything!

Re: 'Operation System not found' (XP)

As odd as it sounds...I restarted once more and what happened was Windows scanned everyting one more time and message was that my Kodak EasyShare software was corrupted. And in msconfig it is on startup. So I am assuming now when system dealt with Kodak and I've removed it from startup...can I hope for the better? THANKS
