Sound Forge has always been excellent. Sony now owns it; version 8 can be downloaded from Sound Forge 8

I'm not into it myself, but Audacity is cross-platform, popular, and best of all, FREE!

Jeez, I forgot about Audacity! Have it on my machine, too. Yes, it's well worth downloading, and will probably do exactly what he wants it to do. You didn't mention the necessary LAME encoding, so I will. By default, Audacity won't save in .mp3 format, but it can edit and save .mp3 files if the LAME codec is installed. Once Audacity is installed, just point the program to where your LAME codec dll file is. LAME Encoder

Hi, is there anything that Audacity is better at than SoundForge 8.0. I currently have that on my system. I hesitated to mention it because I thought it might be overkill. There's Sound Forge Audio Studio which is the cut-down version of SoundForge but I don't know what it is capable of.

    Thanks,

    Chris

Thanks for the suggestions, chaps. I'll download and have a play over the weekend.

i recommend trying Fruity Loops - i've used it personally, a few years ago. its more of a sound mixing program though, but quite powerful.

    Re: Music Editing Software wanted

To tell you the truth, I don't know, as I don't own a current version of SoundForge. Mine is an ancient DOS version (4), but it's always served me well. I should, probably, upgrade to version 8, but SoundForge has always been quite expensive, so I've been hesitant. I use the old version to edit .wav files before bringing them into other apps for conversion to .mp3, just prior to bringing the completed audio clip into Premiere. Can version 8 do more than Audacity? Probably. Is it better? Probably. Is it worth the money? That's probably dependant upon how much you use it. For my occasional .mp3 editing, Audacity's been fine. While it may lack finesse, it gets the job done. It's great for recording streaming Internet radio.

    Re: Music Editing Software wanted

Thanks for the reply, I think I might try Audacity out and see what it's like. One feature of Soundforge 8 that is interesting but also exasperating is it's ability to handle scripting. I write exasperating as it takes more time than I care to spare to figure things out.

    Best wishes,

    Chris

A small program that does a lot is MP3Trim.
