phonetic spelling

This thread from Lounge Matters <post#=521,567>post 521,567</post: > brought to mind a simple little word puzzle.....

Phonetically "ghoti" spells a very familiar word....can you tell me what it is? and which letters represent which sounds?

Re: phonetic spelling

Quite correct sir...., but since I can only assume you know what letters relate to which sounds
I'll just have to halve the reward. Since I have no chocky bars here, would half candy bar do....say split a Kit Kat or Almond Joy??

Re: phonetic spelling

Yes that is entirely correct...., you can have a whole bar!

I've also been told that the o sound in women is the only place in the English language in which that phonetic sound is heard
I've never heard that relationship in another word, but then I'm not the one to ask since my grasp of my own "home language" is tenuous at best
