Removing Network Drive (XP Home, SP2)

My wife's computer has a network drive (drive F setup that used to connect to my computer over our LAN. However, that setup (or drive) is no longer available, so it naturally always shows up on my wife's "My Computer" window as "disconnected." I would like to remove that drive from her computer, but I simply cannot find any way to delete it. If I highlight it and press delete, nothing happens. if I right-click on it the menu doesn't include a delete function. I've searched the Help files and all they provide is a way to disconnect it (whereas it is already disconnected), but no way to delete the darn thing.

    Any suggestions?

Have you tried going into Windows Explorer, Tools, Disconnect Network Drive?

I can't be more specific because I don't have any at home...

Re: Removing Network Drive (XP Home, SP2)

    Hi John,

The drive is already disconnected -- because it effectively no longer exists. However, my wife's computer still thinks it exists because it keeps trying to connect, and it advises that it cannot. Thus, the drive appears in the My Computer list and its status is shown as "disconnected."

So my problem is not in trying to disconnect, it is in getting rid of the drive entirely! I cannot find a way to delete it.

Might you be able to do this from the Disk Management snap-in ?

I followed the instructions and got to the disk management window. Lo and behold, there were listed the two hard disks on my wife's computer, but nowhere did disk F: appear even though it is listed under My Computer as network drive F.

    Interesting huh?

(Edited by DaveA on 29-Sep-05 18:19. )
If this drive is listed in the "My Network Places", it is most likely a "Ghost" of the old connection. Give it time and it will disappear.

    Edit:
Also, if it is still shared it will be listed in the Network Places, until the sharing is turned OFF.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

    Chuck,

If you had 'mapped' the drive to begin with then follow John's instructions. In this case 'disconnect' just means get rid of the logical connections Windows has to the drive. It has nothing to do with the physical connection. If John's suggestion does not work what options do you have when you right click the drive (post a screen shot)?

You should be able to remove this by right clicking in Windows Explorer and choosing "Disconnect"

Try opening a command prompt and typing:

net use F: /delete

and see if that clears it.

Re: Removing Network Drive (XP Home, SP2)

Hmmm, that's rather surprising, since the Windows Explorer disconnect methods are supposed to have exactly the same result as NET USE x: /DEL...

Re: Removing Network Drive (XP Home, SP2)

The Explorer window options included disconnect, but not delete! The drive showed up in My Computer or Explorer as disconnected, but I couldn't delete it until trying the Net Use delete bit.

Re: Removing Network Drive (XP Home, SP2)

Did you actually try selecting Disconnect from the explorer options? I am pretty sure this would have removed the mapped drive in exactly the same way as the NET USE command.

Re: Removing Network Drive (XP Home, SP2)

I tried disconnecting, but it didn't remove the drive from the list. I can't recall exactly in Explorer, but I tried it everywhere I could think of and nothing worked. My recollection is that the networked drive F: showed up on the My Computer window, but it listed it as disconnected. Right-clicking brought up a menu that, as I recall, included a "disconnect drive" option, but then the drive was alread disconnected. I just couldn't delete the drive.
