    What is 'GMT'?

My neighbor has a W98 machine that's been giving her trouble, and she asked me to check it out for her. I'm no geek, but I'm checking some obvious things. I used Ctrl+Alt+Del and found the list of running applications. Besides Explorer and Systray, there were about 10 other things running, none of which I recognized. I proceeded to shut down the first oddball application, called "GMT." As soon as I click the button to End Task, the computer shut itself down! Anybody got any idea what GMT is? I Googled it, and found Greenwich Mean Time, GMT Games (my money's on that one) and some other stuff. She likes to play computer games, and some of the games she plays came off a CD-ROM her boyfriend loaned her.

gmt.exe Windows process - What is it?
"gmt.exe" is Advertising Adware from GAIN, the Gator Advertising Information Network. This program will track all the web sites you visit and send the information to the companies Gain computers.
    You should remove it."

Your friend's computer certainly sounds like a candidate for a good clean with Adaware and Spybot S & D. Post back if you have trouble with removing it. There's no need to pay for software to do it - you can do it all for <img src=/S/free.gif border=0 alt=free width=30 height=15>!

    Re: What is 'GMT'?

Gator/GAIN is installed as part of the installation of a program that you thought you wanted. After you get hundreds of pop-up ads, you may well wish you hadn't installed the program! Here is sometime about GMT, but please note that (as Alan says) you should be able to remove Gator/GAIN "for <img src=/S/free.gif border=0 alt=free width=30 height=15>", without buying any removal program.

You could always try going to Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs to see if you can remove GMT from there. There may be other programs there which are associated with Gator/GAIN also, Precision Time and Date Manager are a couple which spring to mind... If this works you may be amused (!) by the removal process expressing surprise that you want to get rid of this adware, and checking whether you are really, really sure that you want to do this!
