My Laptop for some reason is not switching on. I am able to get into BIOS but not OS, as soon as it switched on, before loading windows,it makes a beep and nothing appears, i tried to enter through safe mode it does not work, i also tried other optitons still nothing happens,
any ideas what is the probelm?

    Thanks Skender

Re: LAptop is not switching on

Oh boy, I've got nothing but questions this morning... <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15> What is the make/model of the machine and is it possibly still under warranty. The reason I ask is that I'm not sure about what you said about this "beep" - could it be an indication that you have a hardware failure or is it the normal POST beep that we expect? When you're in the BIOS I assume you didn't see anything out of the ordinary, huh? What operating system is on the machine? I seem to remember some laptops running Windows ME that would take a LONG time to boot up after the POST screens disappeared, but that's been a long time ago. One more thing, if the machine has a floppy drive, can you lay your hands on a bootable floppy and see if you can boot into DOS (of some level)? If not a floppy, I'd try a bootable CD, assuming your BIOS boot order is arranged properly to do so. As you can see, I'm trying to narrow down whether you have a hardware or OS problem. Booting to DOS would let you investigate whether the machine's hard drive can be "seen" or not. What does the BIOS say about the hard drive?

The make is EiSYSTEM MODEL mid2020, it has Windows XP home edition, i have checked the BIOS settings everything looks OK, i also checked the boot up settings, they are fine, the laptop does not have a floppy disk. The laptop was purchased by one of the managers here at work, and unfortunately he left before I started to work at the company. I do not know if it has warranty and for the beep, when i restart the laptop the processor logo appears but before the operating system logo is displayed there is a beep and nothing appears, you can tell that laptop is on, apart from that nothing else, no error message or anything else..

I can't find a computer by Googling under those specs - is there anything more specific I can use to search with? Do you have a bootable CD, such as a system recovery disk we could try? You don't need to let a recovery process start, the idea is to see if we can get the machine to go further than it is going up to this point.

PS Please note your PostBox as I've sent you a PM on another subject.

you should be able to put it in the folder that the error originally specified: <windows root>/system32/

Re: LAptop is not switching on

im sorry, i should clarify. create a boot disk, and use the command prompt to copy the file from a disk to the correct directory. unfortunately i don't remember the syntax off the top of my head, perhaps someone else could help out with that?

a:dir /p -to see the file name is correct
a:copy hal.dll -i think this is the correct command...
a:c: -switch over to the drive windows resides in
c:windows/system32 -get to the correct folder
    caste hal.dll ?

then you should be able to restart, and if that was indeed the problem it should work (hopefully).

Re: LAptop is not switching on

you should be able to do the same thing with a CD, although you may have to change your boot order in BIOS. does it have a CD drive? or any other type of drive...?

    Al,

It appears to be an HP product . "Hewlett packard ei system 2020 laptop , laptop ibm price uk. Kelkoo Special Offers. Shop, Department, Product, Offer Ends, Price inc. P&P ..."
I can't make the link work, but it turned up on this Google search "EI SYSTEM 2020"
    http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=navc...EI+SYSTEM+2020"
    But I can't find anything else about it. <img src=/S/shrug.gif border=0 alt=shrug width=39 height=15>

Sorry, but I don't believe there is an HP product with a name anything like that. Searching the HP web site shows nothing similar and the kelkoo page you referenced only has the text in a strange font at the bottom of the page.

I also searched the HP site and didn't find anything remotely like that there. Just threw it in hoping that it might help someone else identify the system and give us a direction to go in. Right now we're kind of dead in the water and have no paddle. <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>
