    Moving to OL2003 (2000 to 2003)

We have been warned! In the next few days our IT admin people will be migrating us to Outlook 2003. The extent of their briefing / notification is that the Office Assistant is unlikely to work (something to do with using OL2003 with Office 2000). A search here in the forums shows little related to problems 'migrating' but I'm a suspicious type.

    Any words from the wise?

    Hi Bowlie

Outlook 2003 will not be able to use Word 2000 as an e-mail editor, it only works with Word 2003.

We are using Outlook 2003 with Office 2000, XP, and 2003 (depending on the user). Microsoft's Office Update gives a strange warning now that we can't use it any more because Outlook 2003 was installed from an administrative install point (the original Office installs were retail or OEM CDs), but in daily use, I haven't noticed any problems.

Any specific reasons why Word is not to be used as the Email editor? Just want to know because I use it most of the time.

Many Office gurus recommend that you do not use Word as your e-mail editor as it can make Outlook unstable and with Outlook 97/98 more susceptible to viruses. The stability problem has improved with recent versions of Outlook/Word.

As TonyE indicates, using Word as mail editor in Outlook in the latest Office versions is not as bad/dangerous as it used to be. But if you do, Outlook will keep an invisible instance of Word running all the time Outlook itself is active, and this can be a nuisance, especially if you're not aware of it.
