    HP psc1215 (XP Home)

Hi. A print job has frozen on my printer. I have commanded it to cancel but it just sits there. I can close the printer, I can log off, I can reboot, but the job just sits there, in the process of being canelled.

    Suggestions?

How long have you let it sit ??? Is it a large print job (many pages or a complex high definition image) ??? I've had print jobs I've canceled take as long as 15 minutes to clear from time to time. Often with no rhyme or reason.

Once you are sure you have nothing else waiting to print, look in C:WINDOWSsystem32spoolPRINTERS for files with extension .SPL and SHD, hopefully dated from the time you originally printed them. (My test ones are called FP00001.SPL and FP00001.SHD). Try and delete them.

If the .SHD file is "in use", see if pausing and resuming the printer has any effect.

Note that this is simply an empirical suggestion, and comes from the time when, every so often, I used to delete tens of old unprinted spooled files from NT4 Print Servers. (The test I just did worked for me on XP Pro - Your Kilometreage May Vary...).

Until I saw this thread, I hadn't thought about this for a long time. Printers "used to" have a button combo you pressed for "RESET" but I guess that isn't the case any more. I have an HP 970Cxi and hardly ever have trouble with it. On the rare occasion that I do have a problem, I use your method of clearing the spool directory while the printer is turned off. Somehow it has always worked. I wonder why they don't seem to have that button combination any more? (I looked in my 970 User Guide and can't see a thing about it.)

Before you try manually deleting files from the spool folder, try opening the printer and choosing "Cancel all Documents" from the printer menu. This usually works (after a 5 to 10 minute pause) even when you can't delete the individual documents.

Thank you all so much for getting back on this one. I waited a few hours and next time I looked the job was cancelled.

    Gratefully
