    Desktop icons (Windows XP)

Can anyone tell me if having a lot of icons on my desktop is affecting the time it takes to open one of them like Outlook Express for instance. It seems that when my desktop appears with all my icons I have to wait until I see all of them flashing for a second before I can click and open one of them. Would it have to do with Norton AntiVirus opening up first?

It's probably not the fact that you have lots of icons on the desktop. You probably have several different things loading at startup (including NAV) and until these are completely loaded, the response from any other application that you try to start will be s.....l.....o....w.

I'd go along with what John suggests, as a primary cause. There was an issue with Win98 that the default icon cache size was too small, and this caused the need for Windows to continually rebuild it on boot-up, if there were lots of icons needed to be displayed (on the desktop). The fix was to increase it to the maximum allowable size. I doubt this is a factor on XP though.
