Distorted graphics after cropping (97/SR2)

I have a small JPG file (attached). After inserting the graphic into a Word document (inline), then cropping I find the text in the graphic may be distorted.
    Details

Initial graphic size: 1.83 x 3.54 (H x W)

Cropping 0.7 inches from the bottom causes the text within the graphic to become fuzzy. The dimensions subsequently identified in the Format Picture Pane are 1.14 x 3.54

Cropping .3 inches from the top and .4 inches from the bottom produces a crisp image. Once again the dimensions subsequently identified in the Format Picture Pane are 1.14 x 3.54[/list]Does anyone know of a technique to overcome the loss of crispness?
Any input will be most welcome.

Word's on-screen presentation can be fuzzy when you resize (I guess also when you crop), but it will print correctly. In newer versions of Word the screen fuzziness has not been such a big problem...

If you're prepared to resize before inserting into Word, there are numerous ware graphics utilities that might do a better job.
IrfanView is a popular one that springs to mind.
