Re: NTBACKUP.MSI FILE MISSING ( Home/SP2)

You need to install the program by following the instructions from here, Windows Backup utility (Ntbackup.exe) .

Since you have downloaded and know where Ntbackup.msi is stored, just skip down to step 5 of the instructions from the above site.

    " Double-click Ntbackup.msi to install the Backup utility. "

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

Are you aware of the pitfalls of using MS Backup?

    Dave -

That was going to be my next search. What are those pitfalls, or can you direct me to a post/site with this info?

    Again, my thanks

See if you have the Dell OS Recovery CD option available. Go to Start>All Programs>Dell Accessories>Dell OS Recovery CD. This allows you to create one Microsoft Windows Operating System CD for backup purposes. Just follow the prompts. Instructions for this should have been included with the PC.

    Re: NTBACKUP.MSI FILE MISSING ( Home/SP2)

The major pitfall, is that one MUST use the same version of MS Backup to restore a file(s) that the backup was made with. One can not use the XP version to restore the files that were backup using 2K, 98, Me or 95.

Get a GOOD third party program. Many at this site use "True image" from Acronis

    Doc -

Thanks for the reply. Well, my Dell was shipped 7/2/05, and, per the site you directed me to "The Dell OS Recovery Utility is available on Dimension computers that were shipped between December 15, 2004 and July 15, 2005."

Think I'll try to query them about this cut-off date.

    Acer,

Did you look to see if it was on your system ??? If 7/2/05 is your shipping date, it should be there. My wife got a new Dell in late June or early July and I used the utility to create a CD for her.
    Go to ... Start>All Programs>Dell Accessories>Dell OS Recovery CD.

    Hi, Doc

Under Dell Accessories I have Driver Reset Tool and Express Service Code.

I DO have a disk "Already installed on yur Computer" - Reinstallation CD. Is this what you are referring to?

    Re: NTBACKUP.MSI FILE MISSING ( Home/SP2)

No, that's not it. That looks like a recovery CD that will format your drive and reinstall the configuration that you received the computer with. Anything you've added since that time (programs, data, personilized setting, etc) will all be wiped out. Sounds like you need to raise some H with Dell. If they didn't give you the option I've pointed to and the ship date is what you say it is then they (according to their own information) owe you a CD or the option to create one.

(Edited by acerfmayer on 04-Oct-05 16:04. Just got off the phone w/Dell.)
Mucho Thanks, Doc - I didn't really think the disk I quoted was the one we were discussing.

I'm going to get in contact with Dell immediately.

    Thank you.

Dell will be sending 3 CDs: OS Reinstalling, Drivers & Utilities, Dell Tools. Said there was a 'back log' of orders( wonder why). Dell also said if I crash to call them and they'd walk me thru the PC Restore by Symantec. When I said I couldn't find it on my computer, I was told it was hidden, as a safety precaution for the customer.

    Will keep you informed.
