    XL97 SR2 - Cell reference formatting problem

In a spreadsheet I have inherited, I have tried to enter cell references. Regardless of what I try to do, the reference is always presented as text. It is not picking up the referenced value.

For example, if on Sheet 2 I want to reference sheet 1, cell b1, I type in my '=', click on the first sheet, click on cell b1, and press enter.

Sheet 2 now says "='Sheet 1'!B1" as text. It is not picking up the value.

I have tried putting an 'if' statement into the Sheet 2 cell, and it gets presented as text as well!

What am I doing wrong here ?

    A couple of possibilities.

1- The cell you are entering the reference into is formatted as Text. If so, format it as General and reenter the reference.

2- If you are entering that double Quote in front of the equal sign, that will make it text.
