Can't install Belkin Wireless PCI card

I am having trouble installing a Belkin 11Mbps Wireless PCI adapter, Model F5D6001 V. 2. (Win XP SP-2)

The software installs fine from the CD, but there is an error when going through the "Add New Hardware" wizard. Here is the error message received:

An error occurred during the installation of this device.

The system cannot find the specified file.

Now THAT's really helpful..... NOT! There is no other information given. There is nothing in the Event Viewer logs relevant to this problem. I've tried installing this thing several times both in Windows and in Safe Mode and the same error occurs. I've also downloaded a fresh set of drivers from Belkin's webpage and experience the same error.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I don't know if this "trick" will be of any value or not, Jeff. I've had installation problems like that in the past (not with your hardware) and found this kinda workaround. The installer file in my case was an EXE containing a bunch of installation files. So I used my un-zipper to put all the detailed files in a temp directory and did the installation from there. One time, I had to use an INF file and in another (separate) example there was a setup.exe I ran to get the job done. I think in both cases it was a faulty packaging problem that caused my initial install difficulties. Probably won't help but it may be worth a look.

    Al,

Thanks for the reply, but I think my problem is a bit different. There is no problem installing the software. The problem is installing the hardware. According to the specific destructions for installing this Belkin PCI wireless card, you must first install the software, which consists of running the auto exe file which unpacks all the files to a temp folder and then you run the program "setup" utility. All that works fine. Then you shut down the PC, install the PCI card and reboot. XP will then give you the "Found New Hardware" dialog wizard. It is here that the problem occurs.

We've tried 3 different manufacturers wireless PCI cards and they all get the exact same error when installing the hardware with the Wizard.

Is the logged on user an administrator? Have you check the inf file to see where it is saying the driver files should be?

Is the logged on user an administrator? Have you check the inf file to see where it is saying the driver files should be?

Yep...... only one account which has Administrative rights.

Yep again.... checked the .inf file and basically there is only one file, "BEL6001p.sys" that gets installed to WINDOWSsystem32 . . . and it's there.

Again, we have tried "3" different cards from "3" different manufacturers and get the same results (error) trying to install the hardware with each one. So, that seems to indicate that the problem isn't with the software or drivers themselves but with the system. I've disabled the onboard LAN and tried to install the Belkin thinking that perhaps there might be a conflict between the two, but that didn't work either. I even tried installing this thing in Safe Mode, but that failed as well as might be expected.

A friend installed this card on one of his PC's (XP Home) and it installed without any problem whatsoever.

This machine just had a clean install of XP and is fully updated with all the critical and security patches. What little software there is on it works fine as does everything else.

    Jeff,

Did you try the 'Easy' or 'Advanced' method? Did you try doing it 'backwards' (hat is install the hardware then the software)? When the Hardware Wizard starts have you let it try to find the files or have you directed it to the proper place?

Have you made any other hardware changes? Is the version of XP an OEM or retail version? Have you checked the Group Policy Editor to see if something got accidentially restricted? What happens if the card is in the PC from the start of the OS install?

Re: Can't install Belkin Wireless PCI card

    Joe,

    1) No hardware changes.
    2) This machine was fdisked, reformatted and a fresh retail version of XP (Home) was installed.
    3) There is no "Group Policy Editor" available for "HOME" versions of XP.
    4) At this point, I am not willing to trash the O/S and start over to try re-installing XP with the card already installed. . . . sorry!

Leif: Yes, I tried that yesterday; moved the card to a different slot but no change.

Again guys, NO wireless card works. It's not just the Belkin card which gets this error.

Does anything show up in Device Manager for the card?

Do all the properties look OK or is it flagged with a yellow icon? Also, does anything appear under Other devices or is there anything flagged with a yellow icon (particularly anything relating to PCI Simple communications controller or similar)?

It is flagged with a yellow icon. The reason given is that there are no drivers for it and/or it is disabled. In every case, when trying to add the device with the Add New Hardware Wizard, it prompts me to enable it and then continues but it always ends up with that error message: "Windows cannot find the specified file". Nothing else is flagged in Device Manager.

I just tried installing yet another (4th) wireless device; a USB wireless plugin device and got the same error message. I've checked the BIOS thinking something might be disabled and would cause this but couldn't see anything unusual. I've checked the Services and don't see anything there unusual either. Again, this is a fresh install of Win XP (Home), so nothing has been changed nor tampered with other than the boot sequence. I've also tried installing the drivers manually both from each devices' CD files and also after copying the installation directory from the CD onto the Desktop and get the same error. I've done a number of searches on Google and in the MSKB and found nothing.

Obviously SOMETHING is preventing the installation of all of these devices' drivers. I'm at a loss at this point.

Re: Can't install Belkin Wireless PCI card

Do you have any other PCI cards installed? If not, do you have any you can try? (I'm wondering whether the issue is network devices specifically) It could be a registry permissions issue which usually seems to be caused by something going awry during the OS installation and the best way to fix it is a reinstall, sadly.
