    Design Standards

An open call for information please.
Being in the UK I first thought I should limit the requested replies to those applicable in the UK, but after chewing the fat I guess that world wide standards would just as easily give the same result(?).
I am looking to include within a "specification/proposal request" a section referring to standards.
I know what I am looking for, which is compatibility, scalability, error trapping, usability, compliance with accessibility standards etcetera, but I have yet to find any of these type of standards in general circulation.
In the UK we have ISO9001 for your companies but I really don't want to re-invent the wheel when it comes to having a "software design standard".
Can anyone point me in the direction of current best practice standards.
(yep, tried Google and even got sent to sci-fi babe site which included fictional reference to software design standards - albeit for an alien defence application - that site is weird but wonderfully detailed in it's writings).

    Thanks in advance
