do they get added as you are working in Word? or only when you close then reopen it?

Word/Acrobat Hell (Latest MS Office with all updates)

Overly wide image cropped by HansV - please don't post images larger than 640x480

I have attached a graphic here to show you what Acrobat is doing to my word documents. Every time I open a document, the Acrobat Comments phrase is added twice to the top menu. After a couple of weeks, there are over a hundred of the Acrobat Comments menu items!

When I talked with Adobe about this, the support rep said that it was a MS problem. My IT person says that there is nothing in the MS literature about this. Has anyone out there seen this before, and knows a way to fix it?

I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling office and acrobat, but it does not help.

Get rid of the Acrobat part that works with Office. It causes nothing but problems.

"nothing but problems" is a bit strong. I know that it causes lots of problems, but it also enables creation of PDF files with active links, table of contents, bookmarked headings and other features.

You're correct, I worded my reply too strongly, I apologise for that.

I had a similar problem with an earlier version of Acrobat, and it was to do with having the acrobat addons in both the user and the all users template folders. It doesn't sound like the same problem, as the toolbars did not multiply indefinitely, but you might want to try looking in Cocuments and Settings"UserName"Application DataMicrosoftWordStartup, finding the name of the Acrobat addin, searching for other copies, and deleting/moving/renaming them.

I read your post and wish it would work. I delete the file from the directory you specify, after copying it to a completely different area. When I open a document, WORD or Acrobat creates a NEW copy of the .dot file with a name of PDFMakera.dot, PDFMakerb.dot, etc, and I still get the same problems with my menus.

You must still have one of the Acrobat templates in Word's startup directory then.

Try searching your entire hard drive for any file with a name that matches PDFMAKER*.DOT and moving the whole lot to a new location. The standard installation has PDFMAKER.DOT and PDFMAKERA.DOT, I think that the only purpose of the second one is to add the toolbar buttons and I never use it.

(Edited by HansV to make URL clickable - see <!help=19>Help 19<!/help>)

Your post has reminded me - I might have had to make a blank text file, rename it pdfmakera.dot (or whatever) and make it read only in order to prevent the behaviour you describe. Word 2000 didn't scream at that - word 2003 might, I don't know. If the problem is that Acrobat keeps creating new files in that directory, then

    a) this is a bug, and adobe should sort it out, especially as you've now pinpointed the problem

if you don't get any joy, you could try making the whole folder read only, although that will obviously lead to some other problems when you want to add extra word add ins, and I'm not sure if you can do this without formatting the drive as NTFS and disabling simple file sharing and denying all users write permissions in that folder. Denying administrator/system accounts write privileges on a folder has messed up some backup/file management/defrag utilities in the past.

    There's also this:

    http://www.adobe.com/support/techdocs/324494.html

but it's not very helpful if you're already running 6.0.1

Re: Word/Acrobat Hell (Latest MS Office with all u

Well, after having office reinstalled and finding the problem still there, I removed acrobat from office startup, removed ALL copies of PDFMAKER*.DOT from my pc, created a new folder, placed the template there, and then pointed to it using templates and add ins.

THEN I got a new Normal.dot template, replaced the old one, and the endless acrobat comment and pdf toolbar entries are gone.

Now I will continue to work and see if the problem comes back.

I probably should have known that my normal.dot template was where this "acrobat virus" was hiding, since the doggone thing had grown to over 6 meg in size...
