Karen's Replicator

Karen's Replicator, one of the free tools from the useful Karen's Power Tools site has been updated.

Karen's Replicator can be used to automatically backup files, directories, even entire drives and now includes the option to automatically launch the program each time Windows starts.

    Re: Karen's Replicator

Boy, have I been out to lunch! I've been using version 2.2.3 all along and was unaware that I had missed several upgrades. Thanks for bringing this to our [my] attention.

For those that are not using this program or wondering about it's usefulness... I would say that not only is it good as a program, it is as good as a store bought retail program. Very good at what it does. Not lots of bells and whistles but it will create backups of the files / folders / drives that you want at times that you determine. For me , it''s been a set it and forget it type of program. Highly recommended.

Only if you can stand her style... I thought unregistering would be a better option than throwing something heavy at my monitor!

Style and stuff will be the death of you John! Just extract the subject matter and sift out the rest. Relax. Embrace the vernacular - spelling mistakes encluded.

You're just too fussy, John. Karen has been putting out free stuff for many years and her attempt at "folksy" writing shouldn't give you the beejabbers it evidently does. As Alan "suggested," relax and go with the flow. She's a valuable ASSET to the computing public. Cut 'er some slack, Mr. Pedant!

Resist! Give it up now John. It seems that the very foundations of your religion are about to crumble beneath your feet, as they reveal the 'real Shakespeare' - Unmasked. Get out now, lest you be buried in the rubble with the rest of the misled disciples.

    WOW

I'd been using version 2.1.2!!! A long long time since I last updated. I had been wondering why they didn't fix the bug preventing Replicator to enable the "Run All Enabled Jobs Now" button at program launch. Well... it had been fix in Version 2.1.3!!!

And yes, I am subscribed to her newsletter. In fact, the first thing I do when I receive mail from her is check for new Replicator releases notices. Is it just me? I didn't read a thing concerning Replicator updates.

Is there a way to update Replicator without losing my current settings? It's an awful pain to configure all my jobs again... But I'll probably do if necessary to update and get rid of the bothersome bug.

    Thanks!

    Re: Karen's Replicator

I just tried installing the new version over the top of the previous version. It told me it needed to uninstall the old version. I allowed it to do this and when I ran it I found that all my jobs were intact. I'd made a Restore Point in case it didn't work and I decided to go back.

One thing about the new version is that it seems to use a Windows sound once it has finished running a job. I prefer it to run silently. I can't find a way to turn the sound off. Has anyone seen a setting for this?

    Thanks,

    Chris (Hunt)

    Re: Karen's Replicator

Thanks, it seems to have picked up jobs settings alright.

I can't find an option to disable the sound. Hopefully this will be fixed in version 3.2.1

    Re: Karen's Replicator

I wasn't really keen on re-doing all my settings, either. But after uninstalling the old and installing the new, all the settings were still there.... Just goes to prove that the "Windows Remove Programs Utility" does not remove registry entries. (And in this particular case, good thing!)

Sound? I never knew the program made a sound... Oh wait, my volume is turned all the way to the left.

Just goes to prove that the "Windows Remove Programs Utility" does not remove registry entries

In this case, I believe it doesn't have to do with any registry entry; when you removed the program, what was left is the Settings.txt file in the Karen's Replicator subfolder within the Program Files folder. That file contains all the information about your jobs, and the fact that it was left there has more to do with how Karen's team programmed the uninstallation. Please correct me if I'm wrong!!

    Re: Karen's Replicator

I didn't look to see what was left after the uninstall but I should have noticed that the new installation picked up on the old destination path... That should've been my hint that something remained from the original install...

I made an incorrect assumption and I'm sure you're correct.

    Re: Karen's Replicator

It also goes to show that some programmers still have the good sense to store information in a good ol' text/ INI file when appropriate. I give it an extra for that feature alone!
