Stop Winamp 5.1 trying to phone-home

Hello, I guess I should be posting this request in the Winamp forums but I'd like to avoid signing up there if I can. Whenever I close Winamp it tires to connect to www.winamp.com (207.200.97.161) - I've made sure check for updates is off, I've told it I'm not connected to the Internet and unchecked the references to Shoutcast etc - yet still it's trying to phone-home. Has anyone else experienced this behaviour?

While I'm grumbling about Winamp has anyone noticed a bug when trying to send multiple files for enqueing via Windows Explorer. I get a string of error messages, about three for each file. The process works but I have to click on each error message which is nuts!

Perhaps I should ditch Winamp and use something else?

    Hoping for help,

    Chris (Hunt)

<UL><LI>I've been unable to reproduce your "phone home" issue. (On the face of it my settings are the same as yours.)

Anyway, provided you have a software firewall that controls outbound traffic, you can set the Internet Access option to "never" and have all requests blocked silently. (I use Sygate. ZoneAlarm is another possibility.)<LI>The Winamp/Windows Explorer interface seems slightly buggy. For me, sending a file - which has spaces in the name - to Winamp results in each space being treated as an End Of File delimiter. Thus, left-clicking on something like "This Song Will Be Played.wav" ends up in Winamp trying to play 5 separate files - none of which actually exist.[/list]HTH

Re: Stop Winamp 5.1 trying to phone-home

I use Winamp 2.65, which does the job (playing music) perfectly. I haven't tried Winamp 5 beyond its first release, but I suspect it will always use more resources, since it can wear more sophisticated skins (which, for me, used to cause Winamp 3 to hang). I think the official site still supports old skins for old versions (which can also be worn by Winamp 5).
I don't have the call-home problem, but I never enqueued files via IE, so I can't help you with that one.

If you want to use a previous version of Winamp, try oldversion.com.

Thanks for the reply, are you suing the free version or the paid-for version. I paid for mine but am wondering if I should have bothered.

Thanks, Diegol. My main interest, apart from being able to play wav and midi files, is to be able to make play lists that I can then drop on Nero. Does 2.65 handle play lists?

Re: Stop Winamp 5.1 trying to phone-home

    Hi Chris,

First off, after reading Unkamunka's post, I must correct myself. I use Zone Alarm, and I had Winamp blocked, but after "unblocking" it, it seems it does want to phone home. So you have two choices:
    - Use a firewall application, such as those Unkamunka mentions; or
    - Try setting a fake proxy for Winamp. The attachment shows how you'd go about it in the Options | Preferences screen in version 2.65.

If you don't want to go thru the uninstall/reinstall hassle, you might try either of the above.

As for your question regarding playlists: Winamp 2.65 uses .m3u-based lists, that is, lists contained in a text file with .m3u extension. As far as I know, Winamp 5 continued to use .m3u-based lists, so there should be no problem, if I got you right.

I use the "free" version of Winamp. AFAIK it is the only software that will play back both the (compressed) *.shn and *.flac formats. HTH

    Hi Diegol,

I tried the "nope" idea - it was a no go. It still tried to phone home. I'm using Sygate and I've set it to block Winamp but it is more the principle. I consider this bordering on spyware activity. Will be looking for an alternative.

    Thanks,

    Chris

Re: Stop Winamp 5.1 trying to phone-home

Hi Ken, I checked it out but unfortunately found it wanting:

    1. I didn't like the look (I want something very basic with bug buttons)
    2. Some kind of pop-up wanted to take over Windows Explorer
    3. It failed to import songs into the library correctly, despite the information being saved in the file.

Think I will try reinstalling Winamp and being very careful with the install and see what happens. Better devil I know?

    Best wishes,

    Chris

Re: Stop Winamp 5.1 trying to phone-home

    Hello,

I reinstalled winamp to try and stop it phoning home. I think I've done this but I also suddenly found the problem you mentioned about Winamp treating each space in a file name as an End of File delimeter. I found if you edit the File Preferences and put the %1 in quotation marks then it can identify the name of a file properly and play it.

    Best wishes,

    Chris

Re: Stop Winamp 5.1 trying to phone-home

Thanks for pointing the "%1" "it's not a bug" out to me - which has to be set using Control Panel|Folder Options|File Types|WAV|Advanced|Play for those referring back to this thread in future. The unfixed code - without the quotes - resulted from using the Folder Options "front end" at Control Panel|Folder Options|File Types|WAV|Change. I'd not be inclined to argue against someone who described the coding behind the "Change" option as defective.

FYI - when considering alternatives - you might try looking at <!post=this thread, 487599>this thread<!/post>. The same "dreaded" software also has a mini-player setting w/ an "always on top" option - if you're feeling brave.
