Too many pictures in a document (XP SR3)

I've been given a document to edit which has 25 humungous photographs in it. They're screen resolution (96 dpi), but typically come up on Photoshop as 40 cm x 25 cm--so the compress command in Picture Editor doesn't help. The author actually needs them to be sensible sizes to fit on an A4 sheet. As far as I can see, the only thing to do is to start again, and put the pictures through a photo editor to scale them down. But that is going to be time consuming. Has anyone any better ideas?

    many thanks

Twenty-five pictures doesn't sound too bad - if you open both the Word document and your picture editor, processing one picture should take less than a minute, so the whole lot should be finished in less than half an hour. There are methods to automate this, but it would probably take more time to set it up than that.

Thanks very much. You're probably right. The trouble is that the file is such a monster (some 165 MB) that Word or the whole system hangs whenever we ask for something complicated.

That's approximately a 1.5 megapixel image, which should give you a document size more like 30MB. Could the pictures have been inserted as EMBED'ed picture objects rather than pictures? If you press Alt+F9, do field codes appear in place of the pictures? If so, try this: use Save As to create a play version, then select all and press Ctrl+Shift+F9 to convert all fields to their results (this will change embedded picture objects to ordinary pictures). After saving, your document should be way, way smaller. (Note that this works with inline images; not sure about whether EMBED fields can exist in the drawing layer or inside textboxes.)

I resize the images outside of Word to the desired size and then insert the image. This will reduce the document size and the load up will be MUCH faster. I do NOT use any of the image editing tools from within ANY program that is NOT a stand alone editor.

    "Twenty-five pictures doesn't sound too bad " unless they are all over 3 megs each <img src=/S/evilgrin.gif border=0 alt=evilgrin width=15 height=15>.

I meant the time to process them, rather than the size!

Thanks very much for all the help on this. Indeed, my colleague had managed to embed all the pictures--once I dealt with that the file became MUCH more manageable.

I do not know what I would do without the help that comes from this board.
