XP SP2 and IE (XPP SP2)

Since installing XP SP2 when the windows automatic update advised to do so, IE has been crashing more frequently. Any ideas what to check and how to correct this?

    Thanks.

I've had SP2 for over a year now, and no significant problems with Internet Explorer. Can you discover any kind of pattern in when the crashes occur? Do you get a specific error message, or just the generic "Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close"?

I haven't noticed any specific pattern. It just suddenly stops working and the only message is the generic one that you mentioned. The other part of it is that when this occurs my Outlook 2003 is still functioning and I had thought that IE and Outlook were closely tied together.

I have an entirely separate and different problem on another machine since I installed SP2. I wish Woody's newsletters came out against installing it before I jumped into doing it. I should have waited, I guess some of us never learn.

I'm sorry that you have these problems. There have been others reporting problems with SP-2, but my impression is that the upgrade has worked fine for a large majority of users. At work last year, some 400 PCs were upgraded to SP-2 without any problem whatsoever.

Like Hans I've not had any appreciable problems with IE and I've been running SP-2 since it was released. Are you completely up-to-date on Windows patches? What about Office 2003? - note that there are some problems have been reported with the latest Office 2003 service pack and certain configurations. I suggest you start another thread for the other machine and its problem.

Just my luck, I guess. However, in any case there are problems on 2 out of 4 computers I upgraded.

Re: XP SP2 and IE (XPP SP2)

    Hi Joe,

Yes I'm as up to date as can be. Everything is checked at once when I go to the Windows update site which now, I guess, is called Microsoft Update.

I intended to start another thread on the other problem once I tried to get this one fixed. This one seems to bug me the most because I have found a way around the other problem.

    Thanks.

Do the crashes happen if Outlook is not running?

I don't know because I have Outlook running most of the time. I'll have to experiment.

Can you get any more details on the crashes?

Re: XP SP2 and IE (XPP SP2)

    Joe,

I'll try but they don't happen on any regular schedule. I'll just be using the computer and all of a sudden it will no longer access the Internet except it still sends and receives email. I'll report the next time it happens and try to establish what led up to the crash. After the MS error report pops up and I click on it to not send it to MS, the screen refreshes and once again I can access the Internet without rebooting. Strange, huh?

You should always send the error report to MS. MS uses the error reports to prioritize at least a portion of what gets fixed in the next service pack or major release.

I agree but after the first such sending I don't see the need to repeat. I may be in error but I don't see repeated messages from the same source doing any good.

That gives MS an idea of frequency. If you report an error that only happens once it will end up a lower priority than one that happens often.
