Transfer Wizard: ...does not contain stored info (XP Pro SP2)

    Hi,

I saved my wife's and my son's files and settings using the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard and specified the destination to be a removeable hard disk. Both saves went smoothly and generated v. large files.

I have now refreshed their laptop using the Toshiba Recovery CDs that came with the laptop and brought Windows and MS Office to the latest revision status (as they were before I saved everything).

When I try to restore from the hard disk I point to the removeable hard disk's .unc file and I get the message "The location that you specified does not contain stored information".

I will be in very deep muck if I don't recover, at a minimum, my wife's e-mails (.pst file) and my son's pictures.

    Help, please.

Can you confirm you are using the Transfer Wizard to do the 'restore'?
Are you transferring back data to a user with the same user name as backed up with? (I'm not sure if that matters.)

    Thanks for your interest, Leif.

What other way can I restore? Please let me know because maybe that will help.

    Regards
    John

Sorry, I wasn't suggesting there was another way, I just wanted to check you were using the Wizard in both directions.

Check MSKB 293118: HOW TO: Use Files and Settings Transfer Wizard in Windows XP to make sure you haven't missed something.

Thanks for your help. The problem has resolved itself. I copied the .UNC folder from the removable hard disk to my desktop. Someone at the office suggested this. Anyway, now the wizard sees the files correctly and has restored them. Thanks for your interest and help.

    Regards
    John
