help stuck on "preparing index for first use"

    Running Win2K SP2. <img src=/S/help.gif border=0 alt=help width=23 height=15>
When I open the help program from Office 2K sr-1 or VBA editor I usually get a message "Preparing Index for First Use" which never goes away. I have found that if I hit F1 while on a keyword it usually works, but if I search for a term it gets stuck. I then cannot do anything with the help program, then I click on close from the taskbar and the program not responding message comes up. I then click on end now.
I tried uninstalling all Office help and then reinstalling, but it did not fix it. The help update I saw on the MS site says it is not for Win2K users. Any help so I can get help would be appreciated.
    Thanks,

The only thing I can find that seems even related to this particular problem is this:

"ACC2000: Help Repeatedly Says "Preparing Index for First Use" [Q259929]"

    <A target="_blank" HREF=http://support.microsoft.com/directory/article.asp?id=KB>http://support.microsoft.com/directo...icle.asp?id=KB</A>;EN-US;Q259929

Other than that, I'd suggest searching for and deleting all the .GID and .FTS files on your computer, and if that doesn't help, try the "Repair" option in Office Setup.

That link seems to have got a bit munged.
    Here it is again:

Thanks for the suggestions. I tried the first solution MS gave, but putting the .chm help files in the folders they mentioned (when they were missing) and adding the string to the registry did not fix the problem. I already have SR-1 so their second solution did not apply. I also tried your .gid and .fts idea, but only with those files in the WinNt directory or MS Office directory since I wanted to leave other programs' help files alone.
Maybe I should just add this to the list of reasons to reset the computer from scratch - I'm also having problems with IE 5.5, which no longer works with Shockwave files and crashes sometimes when opening links.
