Publisher docs cant be read by others (Publisher 2003 (11.5525.5606)

I recently got this product. Now I find that the documents I produce, such as a newsletter, cant be sent by email and read by anyone who doesn't also have publisher. Am I missing something? There is a section under the edit menu that has edit this in Word but it is grayed out. And the "save as" menu doesn't have anything but publisher document extensions. Is there anything that will change it?

I thought Bill Gates wanted every Microsoft product integrated into a seamless system. Where is the logic to this? Why doesnt the description on the box or the internet disclose this? At this point I find I have an expensive white elephant on my hands.

I think you will need to save as a web page and send the web page. You could also print it to a "pdf" type of file and send it.

I have used several versions of Publisher and have not seen it marketed that the files could be read without the program.

It does say you can: Easily produce your work in different formats and send it as email. (From the box)

Yeah, you can have all the different formats you want, as long as they are Publisher, Publisher 2002, etc.
And I haven't been able to send it as an readable email to anyone without Publisher.

I guess I started with the publications for print. I see from the attachment that there is another section for websites and email, but what I wanted to do was create a newsletter that I could print for some people who don' t have internet and send by email as an attachment to those who have the capability.

Still doesn't answer the "easily produce your work in different formats" blurb on the box, however.

The option to save in different formats is limited.

You can save as pictures in .jpg, .gif, .tif, .bmp, .png, .wmf, .emf file formats but you have to create a picture for each page of the publication.

The options to save in Word, Works, or rich text formats only saves the text from the publication.

How can I save the text in a Word format? I need to share the newsletter by email. Will the text boxes transfer or just the actual text in some fashion.

Isn't this program largely superfluous if you have Word through the Office XP program? I mean there are templates for newsletter and websites there as well. I sorta feel like I got bamboozled into buying a expensive program that doesn't do what I thought it would from the advertising. Do you know anyplace I can take my complaint?

The save as dialog for me includes the option to save in formats such as Word. It copies the text from the text boxes so you only get the text in the Word document, the text boxes do not transfer.

I no longer use Publisher, instead for simple publications I use Word instead which can do much of what Publisher does, though it can take a bit more time to set up.

The BEST method is to print it to a PDF program and email this file out.
There are many <img src=/S/free.gif border=0 alt=free width=30 height=15> programs out there. Goto the "Software Finds and Wants" and do a search on "PDF" and you will find several.

Thanks for your advice and concern. I guess I'll just forget about using the program and go to Word. No sense in beating a dead horse to death.

thanks for that idea. Might be a solution. But so many more people have access to Word that I think the utility of Publisher, considering its noncompatibility, is not very useful. The more complicated it is, the fewer people will read it.

I'll just put the program into the 'great ideas that didn't pan out' file.

    Cheers, Bill

<P ID="edit" class=small>(Edited by DaveA on 13-Oct-05 12:10. )</P>Publisher is a good product. One just needs to use it in the manner it was designed to. The early version were for "Hard copy" only, then they (MS) has added the email and web. I have seen many programs and used a few and NONE of them will do what you want to do.

As for going to Word, there are a lot of people that do NOT have MS Word on their machine and will not be able to open your attachment. Then you will be in the same boat, and will still need to use a third party program.

Bottom line, use Publisher and then a PDF print program. You will find a LOT of uses for a PDF type program. And the Adobe Reader is <img src=/S/free.gif border=0 alt=free width=30 height=15>

Strong suggestion from someone who uses word a lot and works on a newsletter. Use Publisher to create the newsletter and print it using something like DocuPrinter (http://neevia.com/products.htm) to send out.

I had a long post with the history of my conversion to this (from wanting to do it in word) but the crappy fourm system tossed it out with a "you are not logged in" message even though I was logged in. Just don't have time to write the whole thing over again and still get to work.
