    SHDOCLC.DLL/dnserror.htm (IE5.5 on Win98)

I try to avoid IE these days, preferring Firefox but recently I had call to use IE 5.5 to access a secure web site. As I followed the link from the unsecured page to the secure login page, IE momentarily displayed the attached message. I reached the login page no problem and had no trouble logging in or browsing the site.

Can anyone satisfy my curiosity and explain why IE gives this message? My PC is a stand-alone, never been networked and uses good ol' 56k dialup.

    Thanks Dave,

I'd found that page via Google earlier but it didn't really help me. I've never noticed such a message in IE's status bar before. With my limited IT knowledge a reference to 'dnserror.htm' suggests some sort of failure to find the address of where I wanted to go, yet I got to the page I wanted without any problem.

If it is a repeatable error, try clearing out all your Temp files as well as your IE TIF and cache.

Usually the dnserror page says the site could not be found. Possibly the page that displayed had a link (e.g., inline image) to an external site (e.g., an ad server) that you blocked at the firewall or in some other manner external to IE, so IE could not fetch that link.

Thanks for the explanation, that makes sense.
