What have I done to my database? (2003 SP1)

The database that I've been using to develop new forms has suddenly started crashing when I press any of the buttons on the forms. Obviously, I haven't pressed every button on every form, but the forms I have been working on, plus some that I haven't touched for a while all crash Access with this erro.

"Microsoft Access has encountered an error and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." Then I have the option to repair the open database, debug, and Send the error report.

Repairing the database doesn't seem to help.

The production database, which is nearly identical and on the same MS share, does not suffer from this problem.

I'm looking at this as a good excuse to rebuild my database from scratch (it's several versions old), but I wonder if anyone else recognizes this as a common (or at least known) problem.

MS advises Office SP2, which I am trying now.

Sometimes, Access databases get corrupt. You may be able to import some or all of the database objects into a blank new database. Otherwise, it's best to go back to the last non-corrupt backup copy.

<hr>I'm looking at this as a good excuse to rebuild my database <hr>

Nothin' like a good ol' redesign...it's always nice to avoid the mistakes and try new things you've learned (new code, etc) that help efficiency/add functionality...I love the opportunity to redesign my database(s) - I just can't be bothered to do it with no reason...I like finding new projects <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

Yep, I think this is my reason for the ground-up redesign.

    Well in that case, good luck <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15> Have fun, and force yourself to institute new code/functions <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>

Yep, hungarian notation, good object names, fully nomalized databases, generic functions

Now, If I could only code competently in "Visual Chaos for Applications" this would be a pretty fun project. <img src=/S/bummer.gif border=0 alt=bummer width=15 height=15>

Re: What have I done to my database? (2003 SP1)

Well, my first attempt at a "fully normalized database" resulted in an "overly" normalized database <img src=/S/woops.gif border=0 alt=woops width=58 height=36>

I thought the result of coding resulted in chaos - not coding WITH chaos.... <img src=/S/igiveup.gif border=0 alt=igiveup width=31 height=23> at least mine does...

Jim before you go too far into a rebuild have a look at this

    Corrupt records

I seem to remember a recent thread about corrupt memo fields. The other suggestion is to put the first sentence of the error message in google, you may get some interesting hits.

Re: What have I done to my database? (2003 SP1)

I had the same problem with this database the first time around. It's a computer hardware database, so my master table was the "computer station" which had relationships with the child tables like Monitor, Keyboard, Mouse.

The relationships were so tight, it was almost impossible to take a keyboard from one station and swap it with another !

But, I'm good at table design. Figuring out what's going on between ADO and ODA or when to use a Bang operator, and when to use a Dot, not so good at that.

    I don't even know what ODA is, so there <img src=/S/evilgrin.gif border=0 alt=evilgrin width=15 height=15>

    <img src=/S/rofl.gif border=0 alt=rofl width=15 height=15> I guess I'll have to go to amazon.com and learn about this new code <img src=/S/hmmn.gif border=0 alt=hmmn width=15 height=15>

Re: What have I done to my database? (2003 SP1)

I saw this as an explanation in a book and it helped me understand when to use bang and when to use dot

    FULL IDENTIFIERS:

Use the bang operator ! when you are stepping from a collection to one of its members
    collectionname!objectname
Use the dot . operator when stepping from an object to one of its collections
    objectname.collectionname

    EXAMPLES:
Use ! To step from the Forms collection to a form named Contacts:
    Forms!Contacts
Use . To move from a form to its Controls collection of the Contacts form:
    Forms!Contacts.Controls
Use ! To step form the Controls collection to a controlon the Contacts form called txtName:
    Forms!Contacts.Controls!txtName or Forms!Contacts!txtName
