Strange phenomenon with internet

I've been tracking a strange phenomenon on my home computer. Each Saturday evening the internet will shut off, then once I reboot all is well.
My first thought would be something in the router to shut off the internet at a predetermined time (which I do have set up for the other computers on my network), but mine is not on those lists and the time is somewhere around 9pm or so. <img src=/S/crazy.gif border=0 alt=crazy width=15 height=15>

What might be causing such a consistent problem? When I end up rebooting, it often will blue screen at the end too, it goes by way too fast to tell what it is saying though.

It might be worth checking in Start -> Control Panel -> System -> Advanced tab -> Startup and Recovery Settings whether there is a tick in front of System Failure - Automatically restart. Removing the tick should enable you to read the Stop Code and brief description from line 2 of the Blue Screen, when it next happens.

Have you checked if it could be a "getting too hot" problem? Always worth opening the case and taking a careful vacuum-clean round the inhabitants!

Check your Control Panel > Scheduled Tasks to see if you have anything that runs at that time.

Re: Strange phenomenon with internet

There is only a virus scan scheduled to scan on Monday morning at 2am. Nothing else in there.

It's not restarting on it's own (from getting too hot), but the blue screen only occurs when rebooting after the internet shut down issue. (The system is pretty clean of dust, etc though. I blow it out often.)

I did change the "auto restart" option and we'll see what that does next time.

What else might be causing the internet to stop working, but then work fine after a reboot? I thought that it might be a bad NIC, but it's occurring at the same interval each week. Possibly on Wednesday evening too. (I'm trying to find the pattern, but it takes awhile.)

Check with your ISP. Could they be doing some scheduled maintenance?

Well, the other computers on my home network don't loose their connection and a simple reboot fixes it though. Hmmm

Hi

Is there or has there been software on that specific machine that is/was loaded but not on the others? Sometimes freeware/shareware sets reminders up at certain times and this may be a throwback that causes a conflict.

That's certainly possible. I wonder how I'd figure out which program? Why would a program in the first place cause the internet to stop all together at a certain time?

I've got several spyware programs running on my PC. I think I'll run them again and see what they might turn up.

Re: Strange phenomenon with internet

This issue is STILL happening. I installed a new NIC thinking that it might be going bad, but that wasn't it.
When this occurs, the modem lights are all lit, all the other computers on the network are connected fine, all the link lights on the NIC show no problems.

One strange thing when I installed an SMC USB NIC, it said that I couldn't install the drivers since there was a security issue and I needed to contact my administrator (or something like that). I purchased a different brand and it installed fine. I had even logged in as admin in safe mode and it still gave that error.

Any further thoughts?

Did you try the suggestion in <post:=526,664>post 526,664</post:>? What were the results?

There is not a tick on that item for auto-restart.
I'm getting no blue screens or auto-restarts.

Several times in the last 6 months I've cleaned out and blown out the system. No problems with dirt, dust or overheating that I can tell.

Re: Strange phenomenon with internet

I concluded (I think) that the problem was with the Comcast modem. I talked with a tech and there has been no issues in our area and the modem kept going on and off. I swapped it out today. No questions asked. They said that all I have to do is plug it in and I'm good to go. Not. I had to go through all kinds of confirmation of my acct, etc. Then it said it reset my modem and I was in.

Anyway, if I connect directly from the modem to my PC I get internet, but if I connect they way i did before (via the network), even though it shows connected to the router, I cannot connect. I've tried everything I can think of. The IP shows my local IP of 192.168.1.100 with subnet of 255.255.255.0. I can ping the router fine and even connect to the config of the router. No computer in the network get access even though it shows connected. The light on the router even shows that there is internet connectivity. I have to reboot to get back connected with the IP of the Comcast.

I've got a Linksys wireless G router. Is there some setting that needs to be reset in the router to communicate with a different modem?

Re: Strange phenomenon with internet

Never mind. I realized that I needed to turn the modem on, then the router, then the pc's in that order after waiting in each step.

Hopefully all will work fine now with the new modem.
