    Flash version, uninstall

How can I find out what version of Flash player is installed? I don't see it in Add/Remove and can't find a reference in IE Internet Options. I'm sure there is someway to fetch a list of players embedded in the browser but don't remember how to get that list. I thought I entered some magic words in the address bar with a colon but I forget what it is.

Also, I'd like to temporarily remove my existing Flash Player (which I know to be 7.x) and install a previous revision. I want to see what some of my users are seeing when they view a HTML page I created with an embedded Flash object. This object requires Flash Player 7.x but they're seeing a blank space where this object is positioned. I was hoping that it would prompt them to download the latest player but it doesn't seem to do that.

    Thnx, Deb

    Re: Flash version, uninstall

Perfect find! That answers my questions nicely and I was able to uninstall my Flash Player and see what error messages pop up when either no player is installed, or an older version. I embedd Flash in HTML and PDF files so the error messages were different and that's what I wanted to capture. In PDF the results are mixed --- if no player installed, the PDF file is entirely blank. If it's just the wrong version the file is readable except that the space where the Flash object is located is empty (which is fine, better than blank!).

I'd still be nice to know what version I have w/o having to launch a web page that has Flash in it (and then right-click on the object). Maybe it was NS that had a set of commands you could enter in the address line (they ended with a ":") that told you what players were installed. I'd assume that IE had something similar.

    Thanks again,
    Deb

i found this when i googled for detect flash version: Flash Detect - you could always just add it to your favorites and run it when you are curious.

    Re: Flash version, uninstall

Ok that works but NS has a much better way that is built in. I found this list (see bottom of page)
http://www.pacificnet.net/~johnr/nscape.html which is what I remembered "about:blah" where 'blah' is a command and you type the whole thing in the address bar. It doesn't work for IE.

Anyway, not something I need to now to answer my questions, just wanted to pass it on.

    Thnx,
    Deb

    Re: Flash version, uninstall

There could be differences between the "Netscape-style plug-in" version of the Flash player and the ActiveX version used by IE, because I suspect they update separately. If you use both browsers actively, one would expect them to be similar. In my case, when I visit http://www.macromedia.com/software/flash/about/ with Firefox 1.0.7 and Internet Explorer 6 (Windows XP SP2) I get version 7,0,19,0 for both. But was it that way before I visited the page? <img src=/S/laugh.gif border=0 alt=laugh width=15 height=15>
