    Buying a new PC

Sorry for such a dumb question but although I should know the answer, I really don't!
As a consequence of voluntary work I do, I am able to get a legal, licensed copy of Windows XP Professional. I am going to get a new PC soon and, unless I have it built to order, anything I buy will have an OS already installed, usually XP Home. More worrying for me, it will have OEM versions of other applications like CD/DVD writing software.
How should I go about installing XP Pro and what happens to the installed OEM software? Do I lose it forever or will/can it be saved?
    TIA

Most systems with OEM software come with either a restore CD (best) or a utility that lets you create a restore CD (next best) or a partition from which you can restore (not very good).

In each case this enables you to restore the original configuration, including all supplied programmes.

If you have a new PC with Windows and other OEM programs already installed, you can always change the XP Product Key by using a program that allows you to do this. I'm not entirely sure that this is in accordance with Microsoft's OEM EULA, and don't want to set off a firestorm of replies by suggesting you do something illegal, so I'll just suggest that it CAN be done. A Google search shows quite a few programs that allow you to change the Product Key; among these are Windows XP Product Key Modifier and Magic Jelly Bean Keyfinder

If you upgrade to XP Pro (rather than reinstall) your installed programs should be fine.

Thanks to Stuart and Liberty, but I think you answered a problem I didn't know I had!
What I should have written was "how do I keep the OEM programs but update the OS from XP Home to XP Pro?"
Therefore I think Joe has hit the nail on the head.
So, all I need to ask now is "how does one upgrade?"; is it an option offered when the XP disc is installed?
    Sorry to repeat the dumbness
    Thanks everyone
