    Memory Key/Thumb Drive

    Hi Everyone,

I would like to get a USB 2.0 thumb drive for my Dell 4600 desktop system, 1 1/2 years old. I was ready to spring for a 1GB, but don't see many advertised (Amazon, etc.). Dell is advertising a 512MB for $55.

Can anyone advise which brands are reliable, which ones are not, and if there is a good 1GB out there. Don't want a lot of this "unsafe to remove" headache. Just want the thing to work simply and easily.

    Any advise would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Kris

In my mind, there all basically the same thing. Some of them will come with software that will allow you to encrypt the data. I think Sony sells one such device.

I agree with cbaldrey that there probably isn't a lot of difference in quality with these devices. Just buy one from someone that has a brand image to protect.

I would get something at least 1 Gig. That way, if you ever have to take the entire contents of a CD with you, you'll be covered.

There are sales almost every week at the big electronics/computer stores for 1GB drives. Check out the weekend paper in your area. In the midwest they usually run $49.99 after rebates.

A lot of mp3 music players can be used as thumb drives.

    Re: Memory Key/Thumb Drive

This is really belated, but thanks to jhelfer and joeperez for the advice. I decided on the Memorex SmartDrive at buy.com that you suggested. Unfortunately, I live in a small mountain town and the nearest batch of electronics stores is nearly 2 hours away. I watch their ads in the Sunday supplements and see a lot of off-brand bargains like you described, but the gas cost would cancel out the savings. Better stick with a brand I recognize. Now all I need is the money!

Thanks again, and sorry for not responding sooner.
