Recover Excel Worksheet Saved Over (XP SP2 Excel 2000)

My daughter just saved over a workseet she was using as a template for a new worksheet. Is there any way for her to recover the original without additional software ??

Probably not. The only possibility I can think of would be to look in the recycle bin for the original file. There is a possibility that Excel created a new file when she saved and put the original in the recycle bin. If the file is not there, then Excel wrote the new file over the old one and it was lost.

Probably not. If Excel is still open, you might rummage in the Temp folder in her profile, but chances are slim.
You'd have a better chance with an unerase utility.
(I assume there's no backup of the original [yet])

Thanks for the quick reply Legare. That's what I thought. But I thought I'd run it past the experts. I'm not very familiar with Excel.

In fact, Excel saves the workbook under a temporary name, deletes the original, then renames the new file to the old name. Normally, this happens in a split second, but if you save a very large workbook, you can see it happening in Windows Explorer. So there is a chance of recovering the previous version if you have an unerase utility.

Hans, thanks for the input. I'm afraid that she closed the program, as she called me from her car, on her way to school. Apparently she was working on this before school this AM and saved over it in haste and then had to get off to school, so any temp file is likely gone. And no, there is no backup. An issue I've gone over with her several times I'm afraid. We all have to learn our lessons the hard way I guess.

Unerase a feature in Excel 2002? No.
Or do you mean the way a workbook is saved? No again, see Description of the way that Excel saves files

Unerase utility? I thought that was what the recycle bin was for.

Re: Recover Excel Worksheet Saved Over (XP SP2 Excel 2000)

The recycle bin won't help if a file was deleted by an application.

If a file is deleted, Windows just toggles a bit in the directory entry of the file, it doesn't actually erase the disk space used by the file. Toggling the bit makes the disk space available to be overwritten. So in theory, it is possible to recover a deleted file by toggling the bit again, provided that the disk space hasn't been used for something else yet. The longer ago the file was deleted, the smaller the probability becomes that the file can be recovered.

BTW, if your daughter made this file into a real Excel template (save the file as a template with a .xlt extension into her template directory), instead of just using a .xls file as a template for a new file, then this would not be likely to happen. When you create a file from a real Excel template, then when you try to save it, Excel will change the file type from .xls to .xlt and always ask what filename you want to save it as.

I was referring to this line, "Excel 2002 has an AutoRecover feature that automatically saves worksheets in the case of accidental loss of power or similar problems." in this MSKB article. But thanks for the link. I learned something about Excel (but I still have volumes to understand about the program).

Most Office applications create temporary files while you are working with a document/spreadsheet/etc., and use these to recover a recent version if the application crashes. But that doesn't help if the user has quit the application normally - the temporary files are deleted then.

The best way to prevent situations like these is to switch on "always create a backup copy" for critical workbooks.
