    Need Encryption Help PLEEEEASE!

I have a box running W2k Advanced Server which acts as my file server. On this box I created 2 folders which I encrypted to keep safe personal and business documents I wanted to keep from prying eyes. I was able to access the one folder that has personal docs in until one day when I tried to open a file and got the message that I did not have rights to do so. I am the admin and have rights to perform any action on the system. After trying to remove ownership and restate myself as the owner plus a multitude of other tricks I thought would work I still can not access any of these files. I am at a loss and am in need of help. HELP!

    Thanks

If you didn't forget to remove folder sharing before ownership changing, this folder is probably unasseccable. In this case try to delete (or move to another drive) the problem folder and restore it from the backup made before the problem occures (I doubt it will help but who knows). Just guessing: maybe you still have open connections pointed to this share or some bad clusters on the hard drive (if you do not run RAID drive mirroring). Try chkdsk [ volume ] /R where [ volume ] is the drive whrere the problem folder is, and reboot your server. Good luck!

Take a look at Post 526340. It is for an XP system, but might work in Win2K.

Did you reset the password on the user account, or delete and recreate the account? If so, then it is no longer possible to access the encrypted files.

Changing or deleting the user or their info should have no effect because this type of situation is one of the reasons for the take ownership function. I am the admin so I should be able to take ownership and do with the folder as I please. I have also tried backing up to tape which is suppose to remove all encryption and restore in another area but still no luck. I will try to do it via cd to see how it goes. Does anyone have a link that demonstrates how an admin takes ownership. I may be doing it incorrectly.

    Thanks

Sorry, but the whole point of encryption is to ensure that only someone who holds the correct encryption keys can access the data. If Take Ownership or Backup could decrypt the data without you already having the keys then this would defeat the whole object.

A key recovery agent can be used to recover encrypted data when the keys are lost, but this must be set up in advance.

OK then as an Admin how can I either get access to this folder or how do I get rid of it all together. I know there must be some sort of work around for this issue, I am sure this is not a unique situation.

(Edited by HansV to make URLs clickable - see <!help=19>Help 19<!/help>)

It would seem that all is not entirely lost as one would have me to believe. The following links describe a way to recover these files/folders in this type of event and have been confirmed by our on site Windows SME.

If anyone has anything to addplease let me know. Thanks

That sounds encouraging, good luck, let us know what happens.
