    Mail Merge If...Then...Else (2003)

    If the mail merge field named Middle is equal to "[unknown]" (which is my indication that I don't know the person's middle name), I want to insert "___________" in my mail merge document. (To give the recipient a place to write his middle name.)

    If the Middle field is equal to something else, I want to insert whatever is in that field.

    I'm having a hard time making this work. Any ideas? (It's been a long time since I've done any extensive mail merge work, though at one time I knew pretty much about it.)

    Got it, and it's working perfectly. Thanks!

    (In your first paragraph, I think maybe you meant to say CTRL+F9 in place of F9. I got the brackets in there by using the Insert Field menu item, then deleting what I didn't need.)

    Edited by HansV to correct some mistakes.

    Position the insertion point where you want the field.
    Press Ctrl+F9 to insert field brackets { } (don't type them yourself).
    Type IF followed by a space, then press Ctrl+F9 again.
    It should now look like this:

    { IF { } }

    Type MERGEFIELD Middle between the inner brackets.
    Position the insertion point after the first closing bracket.
    Type a space, then = "[unknown]" "_________"
    Type a space, then press Ctrl+F9 again.
    Type MERGEFIELD Middle between the new brackets.
    It should now look like this:

    { IF { MERGEFIELD Middle } = "[unknown]" "________" { MERGEFIELD Middle } }

    Press F9 to hide the field codes and update the field.

    You're correct, it should have been Ctrl+F9. I have edited my previous reply.

    Glad you got it working despite my mistake.
