typing fractions (Word SP/2003)

I am typing a document that includes fractions such as 1/2, 1/4 etc. The autoformat automatically converts these fractions which is fine, however, it does not recognize other fractions such as 1/8 etc. Is it possible to convert these unrecognized fractions to appear the way autoformat changes them to keep consistency or do I have to turn off this feature?

Thanks in advance.

The feature that converts numbers to fractions works only for quarters (

Only a limited number of fractions is available as characters of their own, so if you want consistent formatting, you should turn off the automatic conversion of 1/2 to

Depending on the font you are using, there may be more than the two or three "standard" fractions. Have a look at this article .

Thank you all for your help. UnfortunatelyI think it would be quickest just to turn it off though.

Here is a macro (unfortunately, I can't remember the author) that formats any fraction. You can turn off the autocorrect options & run this macro by assigning it to a toolbar or menu.
<pre>Sub Fraction()
'
' Fraction Macro
' Macro created 12/1/01
' Changes fraction to superscript/subscript
' Adds space after fraction to continue typing
' Works with multi-digit numerator & denominator
' Must type two spaces before proper fraction
'
Dim OrigFrac As String
Dim Numerator As String, Denominator As String
Dim NewSlashChar As String
Dim SlashPos As Integer

NewSlashChar = "/"

Selection.MoveLeft Unit:=wdWord, Count:=3, Extend:=wdExtend
OrigFrac = Selection
SlashPos = InStr(OrigFrac, "/")
Numerator = Left(OrigFrac, SlashPos - 1)
Denominator = Right(OrigFrac, Len(OrigFrac) - SlashPos)
Selection.Font.Superscript = True
Selection.TypeText Text:=Numerator
Selection.Font.Superscript = False
Selection.TypeText Text:=NewSlashChar
Selection.Font.Subscript = True
Selection.TypeText Text:=Denominator
Selection.Font.Subscript = False

Selection.MoveLeft Unit:=wdWord, Count:=3
Selection.TypeBackspace

Selection.EndKey Unit:=wdLine
Selection.TypeText Text:=" "
Selection.Font.Subscript = False
End Sub</pre>

Cheers,

Edited by HansV to make URL clickable - see <!help=19>Help 19<!/help>

Saw my name in relation to a couple of macros in Office Watch. I later tried to come up with a better mousetrap - don't know if the macro at http://www.locheesoft.com/text/macro12.htm will serve the purpose. The idea is to put a button on a Toolbar which will change the current selection to a fraction if (a) there is a slash in it or ( it's one of Word's 1/4 1/2 3/4 because the slash angle is different.

Thanks that works great so far in a quick test! I had tried the other one but was losing the slash for some reason and I'm afraid I don't know enough about VB to identify where that problem came from. Thanks again!

Re: typing fractions (Word SP/2003)

I have installed the macro, created a toolbar button and a right-click shortcut. All works fine. The only thing I'd like to change is the appearance of the entry on the right-click shortcut menu... Any way to tidy that up? It looks out of place as it is, but again, it functions just fine.

Thanks

I assume you have used Tools, Customize to pick up NewMacros.MyMacro or whatever and drop it on the Text shortcut menu, for example. With the Customize dialog box visible, navigate to the Text shortcut menu and right click on the offending item. You can then Rename it. Note that Text doesn't cover all text, for example, bullet points have a separate shortcut menu called Lists.

If you go through the same process as when you created the shortuct - Tools, Customize, Toolbars, Shortcut menus - you can scroll down to the shortcut menu and right click on the item. Now you can opt to edit it by changing the contents of the Name box.

Thank you for the concise instructions. I use this macro all the time. I find it very useful and have uncovered no problems. <img src=/S/cheers.gif border=0 alt=cheers width=30 height=16>
