File name length (XP SP1)

With W2KPE I was able to save files with long names (usually *.jpg , oscilloscope plots), where I recorded the conditions of the experiment.
In my new machine at the office I cannot store I can not do that.
It truncates it to 31 characters.
An example : 05-10-24_U8_Vdrain-75Vin-3.8Ao is what it saved; although I typed "05-10-24_U8_Vdrain-75Vin-3.8Aout.jpg"
I am new to XP. Is it there a way to change this setting?
Thanks in advance for your help.

Windows XP can handle quite long file names. Are you using a different application from which you save the file? Or are you saving it in a much "deeper" folder?

Further to what Hans has said, I believe the maximum path *and * filename can be 255 characters in XP. If you are use a long path, that may be the problem.

have you tried:

1) Start|Control Panel
2) Tools|Folder Options
3) Click on View
4) and unticked Hide extensions for known file types
5) Click Apply|OK

Check this registry entry.

HiKey_local machine|system|current control set|control|file system.
Win31 file system=0

If it's set to 1, then it's disabled. change it to "0".

Re: File name length (XP SP1)

Hi all:

The complete name of the file (considering its depth), is

X:RH1338_HHS0490_Scope Plots05-10-24_U8_Vdrain-75Vin-3.8Aout.jpg

I used the LEN function from Excel. it has 67 characters (less than 255)
Checked the viewing of extensions. it was unchecked.
Examined HiKey_local machine|system|current control set|control|file system.
Win31 file system . Got 0x00000000 (0)

But in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlFi leSystem Win95TruncatedExtensions is 0x00000001.

Could this be the source of the problem.

Thanks to everyone for your replies.

Daniel,
I checked in my reg and that particular entry is set to (1).
Try it, you can always change it back.

Re: File name length (XP SP1)

I've just looked again at your original post where you state the file is being saved as:

05-10-24_U8_Vdrain-75Vin-3.8Ao

Could it be that the fourth last character - a dot - is being seen as the extension delimiter and thus your are being prevented from using the dot as a filename character?

What happens if you change that character to something more 'allowed' - can you use a longer filename?

Right on !!!!!!!!!!!!
That was the problem.
I apologize for my stupidity. It is a too simple mistake.
Than to you all for your replies.
