Adding an item to the Templates dialog (2003 SP-2)

I created a custom letter template and would like add it to the "Letters & Faxes" section of the Templates dialog. As it is now, it is in the "General" section but I can't seem to find a way to move it to where I want it. Is it possible to add my new template to the "Letters & Faxes" section?

There will be a templates folder with the MS templates and Letters & Faxes will be a folder under that... the path is something like crogramfilestemplates.

The easiest way to find the exact folder location on your computer would be to search for contemporary fax.dot then copy your template into the same folder.

    Karen,

That's the very first thing I tried, but my saved custom Template still doesn't show up in the "Letters & Faxes" section. I suspect that John is right and that this is next to impossible for us pions. So, I'll just have to remember to look in the "General" (tab) section for my custom templates.

    Thanks,

You can, however, create a subfolder of your Templates folder. If you put one or more templates in this subfolder, it will be displayed as a custom tab in the Templates dialog.

Open the template and do a Save As. Make sure the file type is template and you will be looking at your User Templates folder. Now create a new folder called "Letters & Faxes" and save the template inside there.

The MS supplied templates appear under this tab by way of a very obscure registry entry - yours will appear there by being in a folder with the same name.

Sorry Jeff, I made assumptions without checking it out. We don't use the microsoft folders but instead have our own templates folder on a shared drive with sub folders which appear as tabs in the dialog box. You need to change the default file locations to point to your own templates folder.

    Andrew,

Thanks for your detailed destructions. It worked great and things are even better than I originally wanted since I have specific tabs for my custom templates.

Thanks also to Hans all who replied to my question. <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

Actually, I don't think it's possible without hooking into the secret mechanism that Word uses to sort the folder:

    C:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeTemplates1033 (Note that 1033 is English U.S.)

    into the various tabs. What is the secret, I wonder? <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

(Earlier threads on how to remove unneeded built-in templates refer you to the Office installer. This suggests that the scheme might be coded in a configuration file somewhere, or in the registry, but I haven't researched the details.)
