On This Machine Only (MSO 2003)

I know I can uncheck this selection... Although it seems to appear without any intervention initially.

I also seem to have definite difficulty with rules that have this selected when it comes to moving, importing and exporting the rules.

Why does this selection seem to "turn itself on", and can I set it to default to "Off"? And, if I do, am I in fact hurting myself in some way?

    Regards,
    Chuck Billow

    Jefferson:

After going through the dialogs (again), it came clear why this was never really resolved, and why it bounces back to me.

In your first reference, John had answered:

    >>
You can run any selected rules in 2003 by clicking the "Run Rules Now ..." button in the Rules and Alerts dialog.
    <<

And this seems to be where I always get tripped up. Because if the "On this machine Only" is automatic (for some reason) it also makes a decision NOT to be included in the "Run..." List at times as well.

I still have no answer apparently to the original dilemma, which is why the "On this machine only" is triggered, and then why that would be the determining item to the "Run" list, but again, not always...

I realize some of these things just remain in the "Great MS Unknown", and I suspect this one will join the others...

Thanks for the help, though, guys...

    Regards,
    Chuck

Re: On This Machine Only (MSO 2003)

Chuck, I don't have any real light to shed on your original question, but I have a new perspective. For business reasons I'm now in the situation of having two offices and two PC's, using the same ghosted profile, the same single Exchange Mailbox and with Outlook pointed to the same PST file on one file server. (And other technical stuff I don't have much of a clue about.)

In Outlook, I work with just a couple of Rules, mostly moving my received and sent messages immediately to my PST. When my profile settings were ghosted to the second machine, those rules were copied with the "on this machine only" flag set. I don't know why, but they didn't work. I had to reset them, and I set them on the second PC as "on this machine only", so now I have two PC's with the same username and profile and two separate sets of Rules that do exactly the same thing.

I'm guessing that if I had unchecked the "on this machine only" flag before the profile was ghosted over, the Rules might have worked flawlessly when they were copied. And I suspect that the "on this machine only" setting is relevant only when you are on Exchange and log in on multiple differnt PCs.

    John:

All you have shared makes perfect sense, and in fact strengthens my curiosity as to the seeming "defiant independence" of this setting.

It's not triggered by drive letters or mappings, as mine never have changed. It's not influenced by hardware settings, as my hardware changes seldom, a lot less than these settings seem to do. So I don't know.

I do think that a setting that seems to hold this much influence would be a bit more obvious and accessible.

    Regards,
    Chuck
