No multiple user warning (Excel 97)

The Human Resources department has some folders that only they can access. There is an Excel file saved there that is now acting up. It is not set up as shared. In the past when the second person to open the file opened it, there was a warning that it was already open -do you want to open Read Only or be notified. Now that message does not appear. When the second person to open the file opens it, it opens as if they are the only person with it open, until they make changes and try to save the file. Then they get problems. I did a search on the lounge but did not find the post relating to this. I was sure I had seen it here. Does anyone know how to fix this?

    Thanks,
    Chuck

Have you checked whether the workbook has been made shared? It may not have been in the past, but perhaps someone played with the Tools | Share Workbook option.

    Hans,
The workbook is not set up as shared (I verified).
The user said it was never set up as shared.

Could I suggest that you save a dummy xls file into that directory at HR. Then have two people open that dummy workbook. If it does the same thing, then it will verify that there may be some changes that occured on the security of that folder and not be a problem with the excel file. (and visa versa!)

Re: No multiple user warning (Excel 97)

    Rudi,

I had her create a new workbook and saved it as KillMe.xls to the same folder. Then she closed it. Then I had her open it and leave it open.
I went to another person with rights to that folder and her open KillMe.xls. It opened as if she were the only person accessing it. There were no warnings. So it seems there is a rights issue with the folder. Can you tell me what rights should be on the folder so this does not happen? I need to contact our helpdesk and tell them to check the rights and fix them.
    Thanks Guys.

Sorry, I can't help there Reimer....I have no experience with network security and folder settings! You may want to wait for another lounger to reply or post a query on the Windows boards!
    Cheers

The problem is mentioned a few times in the newsgroups, but without a solution. I didn't find a relevant post.

I don't know what permissions should be set or changed for this, I'm not a network guy.

    Hans and Rudi,

Thanks. I contacted our Tech support and they said she probably needs a client/server update. It is something they have seen before.
Thanks for helping me get to the point where I could know what to ask for in the way of support!
It is not fixed yet, but I am sure it will be....
