    Smart Tags (2003 SP2)

My smart tags are not working.

The two checkboxes (to label text and to show buttons) are checked. I have checked the box in options to show smart tags. And I have all of the tags checked in the smart tags window.

Any ideas? Can these be reinstalled?

First, try Phil Rabichow's <!post=Systematic Approach to Behavioral Problems in Word (97/2000),197827>Systematic Approach to Behavioral Problems in Word (97/2000)<!/post>. If that doesn't help, try Help | Detect and Repair.

I like the suggestion, but so far it is a no go.

I am down to step 4 (rebuild the data key). There are no directions for doing this with Word 2003 SP2. Should I go forward as best I can?

It's the same as for the other versions, except use 11.0 in the path:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftOffice11.0Word.. .

    Re: Smart Tags (2003 SP2)

    OK ... this is interesting.

I have 3 entries, rather than 1, called "Default", "Settings", and "Toolbars".

I tried to delete the default key, and I get an error message "Unable to delete all specified values". The option to rename the default key is deactivated.

    Suggestions?

P.S. I have custom toolbars - am I at risk of losing those. If so, how do I preserve them? (I did set up Phil's macro, but that doesn't seem to do anything to preserve custom toolbars).

Try to delete the Settings entry.

Custom toolbars are stored in Normal.dot, make a backup if you want to make sure you can restore them later.

    Re: Smart Tags (2003 SP2)

I deleted Settings. I still was unable to delete the Default key. There was no change in Word. As a matter of fact, the 5 items that Phil says will have to be reset after the data key is rebuilt did not occur, so I'm inclined to think I didn't accomplish anything.

It is impossible to delete the Default entry. You can clear its value, but not delete the entry - every Registry key has a Default entry.

Have you tried Help | Detect and Repair?

    Yep.

I've now done everything on the list from Phil Rabichow, then the Help and Detect suggestion from HansV, and also the Office 2003 Support Template linked to Phil's post.

    Still no smart tags.

If you feel you really need Smart Tags (I almost never use them), completely uninstalling and reinstalling MS Office would be the next step.

OK - I guess we can close this one out then.
