Unable to read file when saving (97)

A workbook is defined as shared.
    The file opens OK.
VBA in workbook to transfer selected line to a summary order page.
When trying to "unshare" the workbook (Tools>share workbook) ; trying to save (or save_as) the workbook; trying to close the workbook; -----the following errors appear:-
    "Unable to read file"
    followed by
"The file is locked. Try the command again later"

Can't access VBA because its a shared workbook.
Can't unshare workbook because of the error dialogues.
Can't save the workbook because of the error dialogues.

Tried opening with macros disabled - no change.
    Driving me nuts.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks
    Alan

Have you tried copying the workbook to your hard disk and to unshare the copy?

Re: Unable to read file when saving (97)

    Thanks Hans,

Yes, I copied the file in explorer to my c:temp drive and renamed it.
The file exhibited the same errors on the local drive as it did on the network.

I disconnected my network drive and went local and tried again - same errors.

    TIA
    Alan

I would guess that the workbook has become corrupted. Try copying the worksheets to a blank new workbook. If you copy all worksheets at once, formulas linking the sheets will work correctly in the new workbook (if you transfer them one by one, the formulas would refer to the sheets in the original workbook).
For the code, you'll probably have to go back to a non-corrupt backup if you have one.

    Thanks Hans,
that appears to be the only solution unfortunately.

I have back ups to start checking now.

    Thanks again for support

You might also try saving the file to HTML format. There is a small chance this will work, and then you can open the .HTL file and save that back to .xls format.
