    inserting MP3 file samples (FP2002 (10.2623.2625))

Hi. I am trying to insert an MP3 file sample on one of my web pages, but FP won't load it. Anyone know how to get it to load, pls?

    Cheers

Thanks, Leif, but I don't want to have background sound.

I want to offer samples of songs, so that an interested browser can click on an MP3 sample next to a track listed on a CD I am offering for sale and have a listen. Not streaming, as my host doesn't support that - just an MP3 file that can be downloaded on the browser's computer to enable them to have a listen.

    Cheers

OK, can you explain what you mean by "FP won't load it"?
Do you mean it won't upload it to your site, or that in preview it doesn't load and play?

I believe that you just insert a link to the .mp3 in the same way as you link to any other file, but it depends on the browser to load the appropriate player. Have you tried publishing it, or are you testing it in preview?

    Leif

When click Insert in FP, locate the MP3 file, then click "open" to try to get FP to insert it on to the web page at the point I want it placed, I get a message telling me that FP "could not load" it. I haven't even gotten as far as managing to insert it where I want it, let alone previewing it to see if there is any sound.

Don't insert it - just link to it as you would another page.

OK, thanks Leif - I've tried that. When I publish to my host and try out the link to the MP3 file, I get a notice stating: 404 NOT FOUND and a dialogue box underneath stating "The requested URL was not found on this server". Any idea what is going on here, pls?

(Edited by Leif to make link live - see the quick guide and/or <!help=19>Help 19<!/help>)

    Leif

I think maybe I need to be looking at linking to .m3u lists, as exemplified by this page: http://www.elisakorenne.com/music.htm

Haven't a clue what .m3u files are, but I'll Google it, unless you can give me a quick education! Don't want to take any more of your time if it's complicated, though.

    Cheers

I don't know about .m3u either, but it sounds like you haven't uploaded the file to match where you hyperlink points to if you are getting a 404!

Let's assume you have uploaded your <code>sample.mp3</code> file to
    <code>http://www.company.com/samples/</code>
then the url you want to have linking to it would be
    <code>http://www.company.com/samples/sample.mp3</code>

I haven't tried uploading a sample using FP itself, but here is an example. The file
    <code>doingoing.mp3</code>
    is uploaded to
    <code>http://www.webideedoodah.com/</code>
so the hyperlink to it would read
    http://www.webideedoodah.com/doingoing.mp3

    Does that work for you?

Thanks for your further advice, Leif. Problem is, I don't know how to upload the MP3 file without using Insert in FP! Can I upload it to my hosted site without using FP to do so - is this what you mean? Sorry about my ignorance here. I've learnt a lot through fiddling around with FP for the last year or so, and consulting Idiots Giudes etc, but obviously there are big gaps in my understanding.

    Try this:
Create a folder in the local copy of your web called Samples
Copy a sample mp3 file to this folder.
On a web page, create a hyperlink to this file. (...samplessample.mp3)
Publish your web. This should upload the new folder and mp3 file.
Navigate to the page with the link and click on it...

THANK YOU LEIF!!! Your instruction was spot on - works a treat.

Now we're getting over-ambitious, I guess, but do you know of any way to have text accompany the Media Player thingo when it starts playing the song, so you can see some details about the song displayed in text under the player icon while you're listening to it? On the other hand, you've done enough - more than enough - so tell me to @#$!% off if I've outstayed my welcome!

    Cheers!

    Re: inserting MP3 file samples (FP2002 (10.2623.26

    Glad to hear it works!

I suspect your next request is beyond me. I think you may need to find a way to embed the player in a page so you have control over what is displayed. I think the way the sound is 'presented' will depend on the end user's setup. For example, here at home on my laptop the mp3 links above open up Media Player, at work I get a new (blank) page opening up with a small Quicktime player in the middle of the page.

Perhaps you could create a new page (small frame?) which is linked to from the list of samples which has the mp3 embedded as background sound and some descriptive text?

Otherwise, hopefully someone more knowledgeable may chip in with some suggestions.

I believe Windows Media Player (and other MP3 players) draw that description from tags inside the file. There was a discussion of MP3 tag editing software on the Software board a while ago. Hopefully a search there will turn it up.
