Disable LAN via BAT file (XP Pro SP2)

Hello, I have a shortcut to enable my local area network when I want to go online or share files with my wife's computer. Otherwise I have the local area network disabled. I'm wondering:

a) Does this actually make my computer more secure. I'm wary especially of switching on and booting up with the LAN enabled.
Is it possible to create a BAT file that checks if the LAN is enabled and if it is enabled disables it?
c) Am I being paranoid <img src=/S/confused.gif border=0 alt=confused width=15 height=20>

Currently I disable the LAN by right-clicking on the icon in the notifiaction area on the taskbar and choosing Disable. But sometimes I forget to do so before switching the computer off. I have a BAT file that runs Karen's Replicator before switching the computer off and I was wondering if there was a line I could add to it?

Can anyone please advise?

Thanks,

Chris (Hunt)

In your point 2, if you can find a command which tests whether your LAN is up (surely not so simple as a PING?) and one which will do the disable (perhaps something starting RunDll32 ), perhaps from here, then the answer would be trivial! But I haven't ever wanted to do this...

Thanks John,

Think I'll give up. The closest I could get was this:

RunDll32.exe shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL ncpa.cpl

This starts the panel which lists the local area connections. I can't seem to find a way to idenitfy a particular LAN. For some reason I have three, two of which are disabled and one of which I actually use.

You can always just remove the cable from your from the router to the modem and you are no longer have internet access, but you still have local nework access.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

Thanks Dave. The cable I can physically access disconnects me from the network - it's only one other computer. I have done this on the occassionas that I forget to disable the LAN before switching the computer off, but I'm wary of wear and tear on the cable. I've had at least one that broke.
