    What the difference (Excel 2002)

    Hi

    Just a simple question.

    What's the difference between =A1 and =+A1

    Thanks

Re: What the difference (Excel 2002)

None. In Lotus 123, you could start a formula with + or -, e.g. +A1+B1. Excel formulas start with =, but for compatibility reasons it accepts formulas starting with + or - and automatically prepends an =. So if you see a formula =+A1, it may have been entered as +A1 by someone who used to work with Lotus 123. The result is exactly the same as that of =A1.

    Nothing much!

Excel assumes a positive number unless you type negative sign before it!
Also it accepts + as a function symbol for conversion of Lotus Files. Usually the + changes to = anyways!

You can use = or + or even =+... if you really want to!

    Hi Hans

Thanks to you and Rudi for your reply. It's just that I have come across several times and I was just curious.

=+A1 causes the worksheet to calculate a little slower since Excel has to parse the plus sign.
