Setting Up PC after 16 month storage

Hope this is the correct forum for this! Am looking for advice on setting up our office PC after a lengthy (16 month) period of storage (in a temperature controlled area). It has Windows XP SPI factory installed although I do have the SP2 CD from Microsoft ready to go. If you could advise me on what steps to take and in what order as I reset this up in our new office, I'd really appreciate it. As of now, I am assuming I will have to install SP2 from Microsoft and update our Norton Anti-Virus protection. I just want to make sure that the whole process goes smoothly - and that I don't mess anything up after so long a period of inactivity!

Thanks for any help you can offer! Please let me know if I should be posting this in the Windows forum under General Solutions instead. Wasn't sure.

    Hi Linda,

This should be pretty straight forward where the PC was stored in a good temp controlled area.

I would fire up the PC as is and just let it run for a while off line. If all seems well, ( which it should ) then update to SP2.
Then go on line to MS WIndows update. It will probably ask you to let it install the latest Windows Update version. Let it do that and then look for and install all the latest recommended updates.

Update your AV program and any other updates to AdAware, SpyBot, etal if you have them.
Check for updates to any other programs that you might have on the machine.

That should be basically it. As long as it was running OK before storage, you should be good to go.

Bob, thanks so much! I will print out your recommendations and follow them in order. All was well before packing the PC up; it's just that all the updates will be way out of date! And I'd forgotten about Windows update. Should I do the same for Office 2003 and check it for updates as well? I do have Spybot and Adaware so appreciate the reminder to update them as well.

Do I need to check out any site re. installing SP2 or just follow the directions on the CD?

Great to hear from you again. Always feel as if I'm reconnecting with old friends in this Lounge!

Linda, Always good to "talk" to you too.

So far as other updates....yes check for more current versions|updates for any of your important apps that you will keep on the reborn machine.

With the SP2 CD, it's fairly easy to just follow the steps given on the the CD as the update progresses.
Keep in touch if you have any other questions.

Re: Setting Up PC after 16 month storage

Hi, wanted to get back to you with a progress report. It did take a while to go through all before, during and after steps with the PC re-set up and SP2 install, but it is all done (as of just now) and all seems to be working fine! Have updated all Windows and Office programs, SpyBot and AdAware and will do others as/ if needed.

Thanks so much for your advice and clear directions. They made for a great checklist!
