Is it safe to delete these ... (WinXP (SP2))

In Windows Explorer - C:Windows - I have approx. 70+ entries in blue -most say '$NtUninstallKBXXXXXX$' and 3 substitute a 'Q' for the 'KB',

    1. Are they anything to do with the 'patches'? If not, what are they?
    2. Do they use up disk space?
    3. Is it safe to delete them?

    1. Yes - they contain the uninstall information for service packs, hotfixes, security patches, etc.
    2. Yes - they use up disk space. If you right click on any of these folders and select "properties", you can see how much space they take.
    3. Yes, you can delete them, but if you do, you will not be able to remove any of these updates in the future if you do delete them. See this article .

Thanks for the prompt response. Also, thanks for the article.

It seems to me, that I have to decide how likely am I to delete these 'hotfixes' etc. in the future - am I likely to want to do so - I've no idea?. These files sure do use up space - some are actually quite big.

More than likely you won't have to (or want to) uninstall any of the fixes. If Windows is running without problems now and disk space is a problem, you might want to compress (zip) these folders. They will still be available if you do need them, and down the road you can delete them if you decide you don't require them.

I believe Microsoft has already compressed them, or so the blue colour tells me!

Can they not be compressed even further?. On my computer, properties for folder $MSI31Uninstall_KB893803$ - Size: 5.31 MB, Size on disk: 3.01MB. After processing with WinZip - Size:1.62 MB, Size on disk: 1.62 MB.
