What do these ErrorM's mean? (WinXP Home (Basic))

I've got XP Pro + I'm a single user so although I understand the concept of the 'Administrator/User' set-up, I'm not very well equipped to help a friend out with a problem she's got.

One of the users on her XP Home system gets the following message when she logs on.

'Windows can't load profile because it may be corrupted. Contact your Administrator.'

    This is followed by :

'Windows cannot find local profile and is logging you onto temporary profile. Changes you make to this profile will be lost when you log off.'

I can roughly figure out what's happening, but I've got no real idea how to solve it. I'd appreciate any ideas anyone can offer. (Her OS is about 2/3 years old + has never been upgraded if this helps.)

    Thanks

Unfortunately, the page you refer to, seems to cut-off right in the middle!

Not on my browser, but try copying and pasting the following address:

The whole page is there now thanks.

I've read through it. While the error message "Windows cannot load the locally stored profile: Insufficient security rights or a corrupted local file. Windows has logged you in with a temporary profile any setting you make will not be saved." seems to fit the bill, (but not exactly), the circumstances which give rise to it, don't seem to.

The user logs on OK but is INSTANTLY greeted by the message(s) that I gave above. That's a bit different from the cause given by MS - "When you log on to Windows XP, it may take longer than you expect. When you use CTRL-ALT-DELETE to log out, you may receive the following error message:"

It seems a shame that the only option given is to create another user account - I'd been hoping for something that meant the user could retrieve any previously saved work. Would 'System Restore' be an option?

Any further advice would be appreciated.

    Thanks

    Mike

More than likely, any work which was saved previously (i.e. Word, Excel, etc. files) will still be there. Have you tried creating a new user account? Files can always be moved from the old account to the new account if everything else works properly. As for System Restore, it is certainly an option. No guarantees, but it might be worth a try.

Also: from the account with Administrator rights, click Start | Run, type

    chkdsk /r

and hit Enter. Confirm your choice and restart the computer. It suppose to repair corrupted files.
