Product Key without Media (XP Pro SP1)

I have a laptop that has the COA sticker and the XP product key on it. However I don't have the XP Pro CD that came with the laptop. Can I use a different XP Pro CD and install from that CD aand use the product key that came with the laptop? Would there be any registration/activation problems by doing this?

No, but the data is on your had drive in a hidden partition. This machine was built by what OEM?

In most cases there are instructions on how to "Burn" your own CD's with the OS on them.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

    It's an IBM Thinkpad T23.

Any clue as to where to find instructions for burning the OS to CD?

On a Sony one gets to it though the "Recovery Wizard". You might check with the on line help for information about your machine.

Also, some one else that has a Thinkpad may jump in and help.

Re: Product Key without Media (XP Pro SP1)

See this thread. It is about T42, but everything is true for T23:

    1. If a hidden partition on your notebook is not deleted, you can access it from BIOS (pressing F1 during bootup) only. Then you can reinstall Windows from this partition (all data on your notebook will be lost).

    2. After 30 days of purchase, to order recovery CD pack will cost you $35 (or maybe more).

    3. For additional information, see User's guides and manuals.

    4. For your previous question: no, you cannot use your Windows XP installation key for installation from retail CD: this key is for IBM OEM version only and retail version wouldn't accept it.. If you have Windows XP restore CD from another IBM notebook, the key will work, however, such CD may or may not include drivers specific for your model (T23). You can download all necessary drivers from Lenovo website (from the link above) and use them if you decide, say, to purchase a retail version of Windows XP.

Thanks for the input. Unfortunately I'm not the original owner, and the laptop was re-imaged before I took ownership. There is no F11 available during the startup. I guess I'll need to contact IBM and pay for the recovery CD.

The OP said F1 not F11. Have you tried other Function keys?
