    QuickTime security update

If you use QuickTime you should consider upgrading to version 7.0.3 as a vulnerability has been highlighted by Secunia that could cause a DoS (Denial of Service) and potentially to compromise a user's system.

Thanks fer the heads up, Tony. Boy, it's been so long since I installed QuickTime... I hope it's not another one of 'em that changes all your associations.

When I installed QT 7.0.3 yesterday, setting associations was an option on one of the installation screens. Nothing was added or changed automatically.

Got it and done. Thnx Hans. QT did put itself in the tray but I just changed the prefs and it went away. (I can't even remember the last time I needed QT, so...)

I'd check your startups in msconfig as well - it has a nasty habit of dumping something called qttask in there without asking.

    Re: QuickTime security update

LOL... Just found that the new version of SpySweeper considers Qttask.exe spyware , and quarantines it (it's a false positive). Since qttask.exe doesn't need to run at startup, I let it do its thing. Having it in quarantine doesn't seem to have harmed QuickTime in the least, and it's now not running at bootup. Prime example of how to make a mistake into an asset!

The latest version of CWShredder also falsely lists qttask.exe as spyware.

    Re: QuickTime security update

Since it's a new day and a couple of reboots later, I just for curiosity checked my Startups again to see if QuickTime might be devious enough to put qttask back. It wasn't but I also saw one I missed yesterday. Since this newest version of QT comes "bundled" with iTunes, I noticed that there was a startup entry for iTunesHelper, whatever that might be. Since I will very, very infrequently use that software, I can't imagine needing something running all the time. Unchecked...

You can download the Standalone QuickTime Player if you do not want iTunes, Apple do not make the link to the standalone version obvious.

    Re: QuickTime security update

Thanks Tony, the link will be helpful for others, but I was already a "holder" of iTunes from previous tryouts and didn't object to the combo download.

    Re: QuickTime security update

Yes, I found that out after installing the latest QuickTime and CW Shredder 2.18. No harm done, as Qttask.exe is pretty useless.
